The Democratic State Central Committee calls a state convention to nominate candidates for state offices in October and a congressional convention in the 5th district. The Davenport Democrat and News urges a district Democratic central committee meeting to plan a congressional convention. Republicans are urged to remain loyal to the Union and resist a growing Democratic canvass. A proposed Union party last fall failed to unite Democrats, but Republicans claim their party includes men from both old parties and has endured since 1856.
Dated May 20 1862 Farwixcron Mississippi the writer reports moving to Isle position four miles from Corinth entrenched and under threat from rebels. He describes masked batteries 30 pounder Carrott zoos and ample artillery while rebels shell a timber strip ahead. Farmington nearly wiped out for gun platforms. He doubts Hallecks plan to attack Beauregard expecting surrender and notes hot weather good health and plentiful spring water.
Dispatches detail a Union surprise rear attack on Front Royal with 8 killed 1 missing and 6 officers 150 privates captured as well as recovery of 18 Union troops. Fremont’s forces pursue Jackson toward Strasburg while Pope reports Mobile and Ohio railroad destruction at Boonville and 10,000 arms and 3 artillery pieces lost by the enemy. Corinth sees Gen. Pope’s balloon recon over the field and heavy Union losses but successful advances against Bragg and Pettigrew.

The gallant Iowa soldiers have earned worldwide honor.
Goop. Gen. Schofield in Missouri orders immediate execution of guerrilla fighters with no trial and requires loyal support under threat of shared fate. Gen. Banks receives official thanks for his masterly retreat to the Potomac after facing a superior force.
