From Hearth and Home the poem Dark is the night and dreary rushes the mind. The stanza offers praise for Home as the Kingdom and Love as the King with lines about firelight, dear faces, and warmth, awarded as a prize by WM Rankin Durye.
A Boston vessel arrives in London where Tudor a cooperative sailor is drawn into a plan by a mysterious young woman who transforms him with new clothes and leads him to a magistrate. They marry, seize a fortune, and Tudor returns to Boston then comes back to London to revel in newfound wealth while his wife’s guardian uncle and relatives are left to scorn. The tale ends with Tudor and his wife living prosperously, aided by loyal servants and friends, while the jealous uncle departs in humiliation.
