The Tipton Advertiser urges a calm review of agricultural fairs, arguing many fairs were disappointing yet financially successful overall. It blames apathy, incompetent committees, poor premium lists, and negative attitudes, and calls for honest leadership, revised rules, and a stance against horse racing and liquor to save societies.
A list of names including W. O. Carey and A. W. Durbin appears in a December 1863 notice at Tipton. Letters advertised will be left at the Post Office for recipients such as Hull James Henderson and Josiah Porter. Postmaster H. Daniels signs the notice.
The passage critiques exhibition practices that divert interest from the event, shock religious morals, and damage the association's health. It condemns premium lists that favor certain animals or machinery while neglecting others, praises worthless diplomas as premiums, and notes arbitrary regulations.
Requisites in the Preservation of Timber discusses post seasoning to resist decay, noting air heat and moisture as decay aids. It argues dry well seasoned timber lasts years, advises small posts, alternating post orientation, and excluding air where possible, with examples from England and Thames piles.
