Dated from Fort Laramie in August, Gen Filut Yellow Bear reports Red Cloud’s delegation with about thirty Cheyenne lodges stirring peace among Sioux. He notes no war parties and scarce game, urges government action to feed or employ the tribes, and mentions forthcoming Commissioners. Other items: Prairie chickens abundant, a Dubuque farmer’s barley at ninety days, drownings at Lyons and Fulton, Thompson’s murder sentence, a Pickwick town site near Ottumwa, a Davenport fire at Seventh and Iowa, Keokuk baby poisoning, and Ottumwa’s 1300 foot iron bridge span in progress.
EXECUTIVE OFFICE DES MOINES Aug 5 1870 Soldiers of Iowa invitation to a general reunion at the State Capital on Aug 31 and Sept 1 1870. The event aims for social reminiscence and civic praise with railroads offering passes and preparations underway for possibly the largest gathering since the war.
The Iowa City Republican reports state veterans from all state military groups will gather for a large reunion with expected crowds, urging attendees to bring blankets cups and utensils as rations will be limited. Governor Sam Merrill expresses hope for a successful, pleasant gathering despite inconveniences.
