Ohio approves large school library purchase for 1859

The State of Ohio allocates about 882000 for school libraries funded by a one tenth of a mill tax on property. Anson Swith, State Commissioner of Schools, contracted last September with Appleton of this city to supply the state with library books for 1859. Appleton’s immense salesroom overflows with books stacked like bricks weighing seventy eight tons and spanning two miles if shelved end to end. Appleton plans to ship the entire lot by a special freight train from Columbus to Columbus. The building is uniform and sturdy, each volume labeled with title, author, and the Ohio State Library mark from 1839.
