Old Milledgeville mill that shaped the town’s early history

The article recounts the 1830s Elkhorn Creek mill site that gave Milledgeville its name and spurred growth in Jo Daviess County. Adam Knox owned the mill in 1839 and added a grist mill, grinding grain with stone burrs. The mill remained vital through years of ownership changes, then declined by 1900 as modern mills rose. By 1920 only stone remnants and a daguerreotype survived, with parts repurposed or lost.
