Three young boys wading in the Mississippi River at Clinton prompted the drowning of 3 year old DeWayne Decker son of Mr and Mrs Albert Decker of Clinton. He had spent time with Mrs Helen Balk near Chadwick this summer.
A gravel truck on a wet road slipped off the east of Jacob Prins farm and rolled over several times. Other drivers moved the injured man to a hospital. condition unknown by noon Wednesday. The truck, owned by Harold Marken of Rockford, appeared ruined after the loss of control at the bottom of Hinkel hill.
The residence of the late Mir. Katie Dambman was sold at public auction Saturday, purchased by Emil Hartman for $5500. Mr and Mrs Frank Cunning ham and their son of Milledgeville were Sunday dinner guests in the Glen Bowers home.

John H Janssen of Chadwick has purchased a registered Holstein Friesian cow from John R Derrer of Mt Carroll. The transfer of ownership for Derridge Rosemary Chieftain was officially recorded by The Holstein Friesian Association of America in Brattleboro Vermont.
The Labor Day weekend saw a nationwide toll of over 400 traffic fatalities but Carroll County reported no fatalities. Sheriff’s office records showed no accidents or calls for attention over the weekend, though highways were busy and drivers mostly followed safety rules.
Mrs Anna Marie Benson, wife of Carroll TK, died Monday at her home west of Mt Carroll at 5 p m Funeral services were to be held Thursday at 2 p m at the family home with Rev Merrell Hutchins officiating. Burial in Oak Hill cemetery. Born June 10 1856 in Stockholm Sweden she was the daughter of Lars and Anna Johnson She married August Benson in 1880 and came to Carroll county the same year Surviving are three daughters Jota and Ethel at home and Mrs Earl Landis of Shelby Ohio two sons Harold and Victor at home three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Elizabeth Trader and Gerald Linde wed at Morgan Park Methodist Church Chicago with Dr Buell officiating. The couple will reside in Beloit Wisconsin as both continue studies. Mary Elizabeth Winkler and Herbert Engleking marry in Savanna with reception at Engleking home and plan a Wisconsin trip. Florence McCarthy and Robert Crist wed in Savanna then reside there as Crist works for Milwaukee Road. Florence Groezinger and Dale Durfey marry in Savanna with reception and two week honeymoon. Durfey employed by International Harvester in Sterling.
A soil conservation tour for farm readers is planned for Friday September 10 starting at 1 pm. Attendees should meet at the Farm Bureau office in Mt Carroll or at the Tom Fritz farm north of Mt Carroll, then visit the Harry Tallman and Donald Mackay farms.
Approximately 30 steers that placed in blue ribbon groups at the Carroll County 4-H round-up are expected to enter the Quad county Baby Beef show at Clinton Iowa on September 17. Farm Adviser M P Roske reports. Each entrant may show two steers and two purebred heifers, with entry blanks due by September 11 to allow list checks.
Two polio patients from the Mt Carroll area were discharged from the Deaconess Hospital ent ward in Freeport last week and are reported to be recovering. Dennis Janssen, 7, son of Mr and Mrs John Janssen of Salem township, was dismissed on Tuesday, and Terry Schmidt, 5, son of Mr and Mrs Kurt B Schmidt of Mt Carroll, was dismissed on Thursday.
Two cars were damaged Friday night on Route 88 north of Chadwick in front of the Harry Spearman farm. Vig Handel, driving south, swerved to avoid northbound cars and struck William Talcott’s vehicle, causing Handel to leave the road and hit a fence. Both occupants escaped with minor bruises. Talcott and his wife returned home.
Mrs. Martin Spearman of Pomona informs visitors here of the death of Ralph Flowers of Pomona about two weeks ago. He was a Burling railroad operator in Chadwick years ago and once served as Chadwick mayor. His wife is the sister of several local residents. Albert Queck Boerner, C F Schreiner, Herbert Barnhart and Claude Cook are named. The Cook family planned a cattle trip to Wilsey Kansas with plans to return Sunday, but Mr. Cook Sr expects to stay about two weeks.
Chadwick Recreation lanes prepare a four night league slate as remodeling nears completion. A 12 team men’s league bowls Mondays, a second on Tuesdays, Lanark’s 10 team league Wednesdays, and a six team women’s league Thursdays from 7 to 9 pm. County clerk reports five party tickets appear on the November 2 general election ballot in Hindis. Republican, Democrat, Prohibition, Socialist, and Socialist Labor are listed. The Wallace Progressive ticket was barred by an Illinois Supreme Court ruling over insufficient signatures. No statewide proposition items appear this fall.
Oliver Olson was elected head of the Grange at a meeting held Thursday evening in Chadwick. Guest speaker Rock Creek Crane leader Moisi spoke on Washington methods. Mr and Mrs Harold Stans provided the duets. lunch was by the unmarried men. Next meeting Sept 16 with the young unmarried women to furnish lunch.
Charles Aude exhibited his purebred Hereford cow at the Whiteside County Fair. The two year old cow won first prize in the dairy division, marking a milestone in Aude's livestock program.

Mr Carroll Krafts Clothing sponsors a guessing contest to estimate the square inches of the 18 ft pair of overalls mounted on the store’s east wall. The entry window ends this Saturday with prizes for the closest guess.
