At the annual Carroll County Farms Institute held in Milledgeville the judges announced prizes across divisions. Winners include Mrs Ray Meyers Milledgeville for laundry soap and jars of meat, Miss Bernice Williamson Carroll for vegetables, and Miss Elizabeth Mthean Milledgeville for a pair of jars. Site for next year’s meet to be selected later by officers not yet named.

Mayor Kim B Law and deputies, plus sheriffs, guarded the Savanna–Subula crossing all night and into Friday, no suspects found. A well-dressed man delivering the warning rang Law’s doorbell, then fled. authorities treated it seriously and maintained a visible watch.
Janis H Andrews, superintendent of the state division for old age assistance, announced Friday his resignation, effective October 19, submitted to Governor Henry Horne who reluctantly accepted. Andrews had held the post two years, but was largely supplanted by John C Weigel amid tensions between state officials and the federal government over Social Security Board halting grants for old age assistance due to perceived inefficiency.
Wary Shiley of Lanark, president of the Carroll County Sportsmen's Club, announced early this week that the fish fry for club members planned for Friday night has been postponed. A new date will be announced soon as Shiley said. Shimer Junior College goes on the air next Monday at 1:30 pm in a series of programs to be held each Monday.
Conservation Director Thomas Lynch says Illinois and Missouri Iowa and Wisconsin reached a compact on waterfowl seasons along the Mississippi moving to November 1 for dove season and November 30 for others. The deal allows cross river hunting with licenses from home state and frames nonresident licensing across the river. Uncertainty remains for enforcement as negotiations with Iowa and Wisconsin falter and the middle river line defines state boundaries.
Alson Gilmore of Swanson Gilmore and Castenholtz, a leading Chicago commission firm, died in Honolulu, Hawaii and was buried in Chicago on Saturday, Oct. 23.
Four truckloads of cattle overturned early Thursday at the corner of Chicago Avenue and Main Street Savanna. Two cows were killed and 10 cattle injured as the right rear wheel came off. Sixteen cattle were aboard. the survivors were reloaded after repairs. Vehicle owned and operated by H M Bly of Adlington. Neither Bly nor N J Leamon injured.
Clyde Sisler dairy tester for the Car y County Dairy Herd Improvement association resigns effective November 1 after about two years. TM RP Roske farm advisor announced the vacancy at a meeting of association members and others interested in dairy herds.
George Katzenberger a Freedom township farmer lost the last three fingers of his left hand Friday while operating a buzz saw at his farm He was cutting old boards when his left hand was fed into the blade in an accident authorities said.
A truckload of cattle caused a rear wheel failure on Savanna street triggering street disruption as county officials joined in a tour of Wisconsin highways. The incident follows a busy period of transportation concerns and ongoing maintenance projects in the region.
State's Attorney John L Brearton says jurors ordered to report Monday morning for the November term of circuit court. A busy session is in prospect with offenders bound over and several more matters likely to be presented to the grand jurors.
John Noble, a 67 year old Mt Carroll resident, fell from a scaffold while working on a barn project at the Colehour stables. He suffered broken ribs and was taken from his home to St Francs Hospital in Freeport after initial care.
Attorney General Otto Kerner ruled the state acted without authority in rejecting welfare superintendent nominations in Carroll and other counties. He said county boards may nominate as they see fit, without limiting to three nominees from any single party. The ruling questions Governor Horner's directive and notes possible bipartisan nomination language.
Three townships York Ustick and Glyde in Carroll and Whiteside counties cooperate to gravel a 1 4 mile eastward road from Route 78 near Milledgeville to Adolph road in Fair Haven. Gravel donated by Gibson Bros from the Isenhart farm, started Wednesday.
William Frank a Mt Carroll furniture dealer faced a morning fire on his truck while traveling the highway near Mill edgeville and Sterling. Firefighter companion Charles Dynes helped extinguish the blaze as most of the load burned, a bed dressing table and day linenport survived. A cigarette tossed from a passing car is suspected. Relief clients in Mt Carroll township may be out of luck if they refuse to work. Supervisor Sherman Myers warns no relief for noncontributors.
Nearly 250 teachers and former instructors attended the Carroll County teachers institute opening in Milledgeville. The program featured Dr Garry C Myers on human touches in teaching, music by the Milledgeville High School choir, and talks by Dr W P Dearing and Dr Myers on youth values together with home and school cooperation. Meanwhile students enjoy a three day county vacation and may plan Halloween pranks.
A group led by Carroll county supervisors and the county highway superintendent toured Wisconsin highways from Lanark to several counties. State engineers outlined costs for skin treated roads at 800 to 1000 dollars per mile and turnover roads at 1500 to 2000 dollars per mile, with totals for bituminous use and miles of road built in 1938.
