Carroll County Farmers Institute Set for Oct 24 25

Arrangements are under way for the annual Carroll County Farmers Institute to be held at the Lincoln school gym in Savanna on October 24 and 25. Dr. A. W. Noland University of Illinois will speak at the public meeting Friday night. The program covers exhibits judging demonstrations and musical numbers with several speakers from Illinois and local groups. Premiums totaling about 100 dollars in merchandise and cash will be awarded for men's exhibits and a complete 4 H list accompanies the event.

Local corn husking contest planned near Lanark

Carroll county Farm Bureau officials sponsor the annual husking contest to be held Monday Oct 27 on the Otho Bloyer farm five miles southeast of Lanark. Palmer Dauphin seeks a third title as 10 huskers attempt to set a county mark near 50 bushels to qualify for state meet. Teachers of District Met at Rockford

Northwestern division of the Illinois Education Association adopted fourteen resolutions on teachers roles in the national defense program. Nearly 1,800 educators from northern Illinois attended the convention at the Midway theater with speakers O. T. Bright Franklin B. Snyder and Drew Pearson. New officers include S. R. Galena Defeats Mt Carroll High 12 to 0 in Muddy Clash

Galena beat Mt. Carroll High 12 to 0 in a U. S. Grant conference game on a muddy field. Galena scored a 1st quarter touchdown and a second quarter TD, both with failed extra points. Mt. Carroll’s lone threat came in the final minutes but was stopped.

Savanna Triumphs Over Sterling Community 24 12

Savanna high school defeated Sterling Community high 24 to 12 on Saturday. Savanna scored in all four periods with Johnson passing three touchdowns and scoring one on a line play. All extra points failed.

Federal auto tax payments rise in Carroll county

Under the use tax, Carroll county automobile and truck owners will contribute to the defense fund for 17 months. The 1940 census lists 1486 autos and 260 trucks on county farms, with farm contributions around $12,319.14 and county totals possibly near $28,000.

Carroll County Woman's Clubs Plan Fall Convention

Fall convention of Carroll county federated Woman's clubs will be held next Tuesday Oct 28 at Hope Evangelical church Chadwick with Mrs R B Polhill president in charge. A miscellaneous shower was held Friday afternoon at the W. C. Robinson home for Mrs. Russell Lego formerly Frances Robinson of Savanna. A midweek Chicago Stock Yards market report shows Carroll county cattle among the high sellers. G Roy Moll of Lanark sent a large shipment of yearling steers that topped at 12.25 dollars per cwt, with 60 head averaging 962 pounds each.

Six young men from Carroll county left at 5 15 Monday for an army induction station in Chicago to begin training. Induction orders were issued Oct 16 to nine men while three were deferred or transferred. The county’s class 1 A list is nearly exhausted and few more can be sent without reclassification or new registrants. Publisher Foster Stagg Dies After Illness in Iowa City

Foster L. Stagg 4 percent publisher of the Review died suddenly Tuesday morning Oct 21 at an Iowa City hospital after a two year illness. He had directed Thomson and several other papers since 1928 and served as secretary of the Northwestern Illinois Editorial association. He is survived by his widow Hazel Gilpin and three children Gilpin Elinor and Richard, plus his mother Lena Stagg and sister Mrs Paul Heu isinkveld. Burial at Lower York cemetery, Thomson. Funeral at 2 p m Friday at Methodist church Thomson with Rev Clarence Ploch.
