The annual Parent's Weekend at Shimer College will draw over 200 parents October 12 13 with an Autumn Convocation by Millikin University president Paul L McKay at 11:00 a.m. Sunday in Metcalf Auditorium.
Brian Stagg, an eighth grade student at Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo Illinois, ranks among the top nine academically for the first tri weekly period ending September 27 with a 4.50 average. He also earns second honors with a 4.00 effort grade and will be promoted from Cadet to Private during Homecoming gate ceremonies.
Illinois laws in 1868 banned bringing playing cards into the state and limited Sunday activities to religious or necessary charity work with fines up to five dollars. Ferrymen could operate, and conscience rights allowed Sabbath variation. Divorce grounds echoed earlier totals, jury trials were common, marriage ages have risen to 18 for men and 16 for women, and marriage licenses were once not required. Voting rules remained strict, prohibiting double voting.

Mrs. George Bush and Mrs. Josephine Hill of Oak Park Illinois visited Thomson contacts Mrs. Kathryn Cooper and Mr. Tom Kustes for the funeral of their uncle Charles A. Hill former Savanna resident held Monday in Savanna. Local visitors posted in Thomson include the Wiebenga and Witt families from Fulton Clinton Iowa and Savanna with other relatives from Miles Iowa and Chadwick.
Mr and Mrs Calvin Eslinger and Kathy Eslinger and Mrs Alan Hickey joined Mr and Mrs Roger Eslinger for Sunday supper. Visitors included Mr and Mrs Clarence Cooper and Ray Cooper of Savanna with Tom Kustes and Mrs Katheryn Cooper. John Kramer and G A Smith from Tucson ended a Thomson stay and visited Helen Goble in Woodstock and Col Homer Wells in Columbus. The Wilt family hosted them two weeks. Other gatherings included Lawrence Hamman family, Walter Krueppel family in Thomson with Arlington Iowa hosts, Mervin Marshall with William Mullen family in Elgin Illinois, and Thurman McCoy Amos Reed of Elizabeth with James Morrison in Thomson.
Oliver Olson Jr USN 38 son of Mr and Mrs Oliver B Olson Route 1 Milledgeville Illinois serves aboard the nuclear powered attack carrier Enterprise. Crewmembers awarded Navy Unit Commendation for ship performance off Vietnam coast. Enterprise in dry dock Bremerton Washington. to return to Alameda California on completion.
Savanna Illinois soldier Specialist Four Donald A. LaShelle, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald B. LaShelle, is with the 92nd Assault Helicopter Company near Dong Ba Thin in Vietnam as a radio mechanic since September 18. His wife Ann resides at 704 Hickory Street, Savanna.
Mr and Mrs Wilfred Smith of Bellevue Iowa visited Saturday evening for supper with Mr and Mrs Eugene Diephuis and family.
