New signs establish a 45 mph speed limit on the new section of State Highway 64 near Mt. Carroll from east of Jackson Street to just west of Routes 78 and 64. Previously this section allowed 65 mph since completion.
Bruce Swanson of Chadwick sustained minor injuries when his car left the Thomson Argo road about 12:30 a m Monday and overturned two miles east of Thomson. Estimated damage to the car was 600 dollars and Swanson was cited for driving off the road.
Milledgeville hosts Progress Daze December 1 2 3 with eight new businesses opening doors. Chamber of Commerce promotes welcome to the community and invites visits to each new store. A feature at Missile Lanes owner George Baylor hosts bowler Stan Thaden exhibition Saturday and Sunday. Door prizes and free coffee and doughnuts at many venues.
Lanark B F Gulf Station forms a strong Sterling Independent Basketball League team with coaches and ex high school stars from Carroll County. They face Milledgeville in league play after a 72 60 win, led by Sands 24 Mason 22 Knutts 14 Leach 4 Marth 2.
Carroll County 4 H home economics club leaders meet December 6 at 1 30 p m at Farm Bureau Hall Mt Carroll to discuss 4 H policies and county events for 1962 and exchange program ideas.
The Carroll County Tuberculosis Association started its annual fund drive on Monday November 13 by mailing 3977 Christmas Seal letters to county homes. Funds support TB control education and medical research with three new TB cases found in the county this year.
Mr. and Mrs. Francis Provant celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary Sunday evening in the high school community room. About 180 relatives and friends attended. pink and silver decor, carnations, and orchid corsages highlighted the event. Guests came from Davenport and Clinton Iowa, Sterling Falls, Milledgeville, Polo, Forreston, Shannon, Mount Carroll, Chadwick, and Lanark.

Carroll County American Red Cross held its annual meeting in St. Wendelin Hall Shannon with vice chair Joy Sword presiding. The report highlighted 72 swimming students at Mackay Timber Lake and home service aid for over 80 individuals and families. Norman Yackle spoke on survival in an atomic attack. Next meeting set for Mt. Carroll Jan 16.
Mrs Lyle Livengood and Mrs Leo Coble of Milledgeville and Miss Dorothy Footitt Home Adviser will run a training school for 4 H clothing club leaders at Farm Bureau Hall Mt Carroll from 9 30 a m to 3 00 p m on December 1. Leaders will learn sewing techniques and discuss 4 H clothing units.
The Carroll county November term grand jury returned seven indictments with five named individuals. Benny Kerkove of Savanna faces two counts of statutory rape and two counts of attempted rape. Richard McWorthy of Savanna is charged with taking indecent liberties with a 13 year old. Roger Chase of near Rockford is indicted on a four count manslaughter charge. Neal and Ree Dauphin of Savanna are charged with forgery and conspiracy.
The Jo-Carroll Electric Cooperative will hold its annual meeting on Saturday December 2 at the Savanna high school gym starting at 10 a.m. Officers directors and committees will report, three directors will be elected for three-year terms, and other business may be brought before the meeting. A noon luncheon will be served by the Jacobstown Community Club with music from the Glen Law Orchestra. Nominees include Boyd Handel Chadwick E L Dauphin and Jesse McIntyre Savanna and Louis H Haug Elizabeth Victor Ricke East Dubuque and Gotthilf Haas Elizabeth. Additional nominations may be made at the meeting.
Carroll county reports October sales of Series E and H United States savings bonds totaling 92144. F E Weidman of Mt. Carroll serves as general county chairman of the savings bonds committee.

Judge Robert L Bracken entered a decree in Carroll County Circuit Court ending the Stransky will litigation. The Family Settlement Agreement assigns equal shares to Margaret Graham Stransky Franklin Graham Stransky and Lucile Rosprim Stransky subject to the will bequests. The decree dismisses the will contest and the count for a Receiver and directs probate administration under the court.
Lockmaster Glen A. Wenders and his crew at Lock and Dam 13 south of Thomson were honored for 18 years with no lost time accidents. They have logged 476,891 man hours since December 1942’s last incident. Col. Richard L. Hennessy presented the safety award during his inspection tour of Mississippi River locks and dams in the district.
Carroll County Extension units will hold December lessons on cutting calories in refreshments for coffee breaks luncheons and parties. Each unit lists speakers topics and roll call prompts tied to Christmas themes and recipes with a focus on practical weight control efforts.
The Salem Home Bureau session on Tuesday November 28 gathered 14 members and 4 guests at Mrs Blaine Mc Ginty s home. The Savanna area is highlighted, with a request to notify local liquor boards and potential legal action if reports are not filed. The report, signed by foreman Paul Heusinkveld, was filed after the November term.

Surviving wife Nell, son William, brother Howard, sister Mrs Tyrell Davis. William H Maguire 80 found dead Sunday in Savanna at 110 Diagonal Street. Coroner's inquest and funeral held at Law funeral home with burial Savanna township cemetery. Born Wisconsin. never married. ran a general store at Lanesville for ten years. Surviving brother James of Savanna.
Mt Carroll David Taets 17 died Sunday in Moline City hospital from a rheumatic heart condition. Mass 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Catholic church Mt Carroll officiated by Rev Edward McIsaac. Burial in St Anthony cemetery Atkinson. Born Dec 28, 1943 Rock Island son of Mr and Mrs William Taets. Survived by parents four sisters Judy Barbara Mrs Don Enyeart Atkinson and Mrs Richard Portray Hillsdale.
Vernon L Rawlins 64 of Morrison died at 7 a m Wednesday Nov 22 in Bradenton Florida while on a winter vacation. The body was returned to Morrison for a 2 p m Monday funeral at the Methodist church with Rev David Fouts officiating and burial in Grove Hill Cemetery. He was born July 26 1897 in York township Carroll county son of Herbert L and Hattie Carpenter Rawlins and lived in Thomson before farm work near Ideal and later Morrison Implement Co partner. He retired in 1960. Surviving are his wife a son and a daughter two brothers and four grandchildren. He was a member of I O O F and the Morrison Lions Club.

A 68 by 28 foot 19-pen hoghouse plus a 30 by 68 foot concrete feeding floor was recently completed on the farm of Mrs. John G. Freeman northwest of Chadwick. The building includes a loft for hay and straw, feed bins, automatic waterers, heat lamps, baby pig guards, triple insulation, and a sloped floor for cleanliness aimed at efficient hog production. Mrs. Ferguson and her children visited the Sapp home in Beloit, Wisconsin last Thursday.
