About 50 farmers from Carroll County met in Mt Carroll with Sheriff Eber Shepherd and 22 deputies to discuss forming a county vigilante group to curb poultry and livestock theft. Ross Saunders outlined township committees, IDs for stock, and sheriff records to identify stolen property. a public mass meeting near Mt Carroll was planned. County school superintendents from northwestern Illinois also met in Mt Carroll to discuss district educational issues.
Governor Horner opposes a special election to fill the 15th circuit judgeship vacancy created by William J. Emerson's death. With high costs, a nomination likely occurs during the township election next April. Republican and Democratic leaders name several possible candidates from Lee, Ogle, and neighboring counties.
Dr. Raymond B. Culver new president of Frances Shimer College Mt Carroll and Mr Cav er were honored at a reception in West hall lounge Sunday afternoon. Many guests from Mt Carroll and other towns attended the event.
Thos Thides notes Carroll merchant Rhodes observes the 6th anniversary of the Rhodes Lumber Co in Mt Carroll. The founder’s son Fred and wife celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary on the same date. Rhodes helped establish the Mt Carroll firm in 4 and has long served as mayor and alderman. His brother John led the Savannah operation. The firm remains active with Fred and Fred Jr. in the business.
County sportsmen plan a mass December meeting at the Mt Carroll courthouse to reorganize chapters, elect officers, and discuss revising state and federal game laws. They expect to obtain a supply of young quail and possibly wild turkeys for release, contingent on local organization.
The Illinois Emergency Relief Commission approved a plan to reopen approximately 12,000 WPA jobs for clients still in need after a review of former relief recipients currently employed by the WPA. An extra $125,000 in federal funds was authorized to cover costs, with October relief costs estimated at 136,576 cases, up 14 percent from September driven largely by Chicago increases.
Bids for building Dam No 13 across the Mississippi River south of Thomson will be opened January 5 at the district engineer's office in Rock Island. The dam will be 5158.5 feet long, with movable gates and concrete piers, plus an earth dike along the Town side. Locks work near completion while timber owners north of the site fear cutoffs during construction amid government land appraisal talk.
Seven counties will take part in a district rural drama and music contest at Lanark on January 7, 1937 after a Farm Bureau meeting. Each county will run preliminaries with groups earning voting points to enter the district meet. Farm Adviser Roske aims to develop local talent through one act plays and lists 50 plays. Previously Carroll County Farm Bureau quartet won state contest, plans to compete again.
A conference of Boy Scouts of America leaders in Freeport named A J F Stukenberg of Freeport president for the U S Grant area. Candidacies included two Savanna men on committees and a full slate of officers with Freeport and Lancaster representatives. The meeting appointed chairmen for camping civic service health safety and troop organization among others.
Knowlton L. Ames, state director of Finance, resigns as announced Monday by Governor Horner. He gave no comment on a successor. The move had been anticipated for months as Ames preferred to return to private business and other changes in the state administration are expected.
Federated Men of local Methodist churches announce a public meeting on Monday evening December 7 at the Milledgeville M E church. The Rev Theo Potter pastor Lanark Methodist will speak on The Difference Between Communism Socialism Nazism and Fascism. Other talks follow and refreshments are provided at no charge.
The Carroll County Farmers Institute announces prizes for Fermang Kormera Prize sections to be judged at Lanark December 11 and 12. Entries must be in by 10 30 a m on December 11 and judged by noon. Premiums limit to two entries per class per family. Prizes include first 15 cents second 30 cents third 25 cents for various grain and crop categories and special ribbons for yellow and white corn.
The Milledvovuly school group elected A. auth sepeuitenndent as president Shoal pester Ghul. Stank Monitpyek and Hard Bo Walker were named vice president and secretary treasurer. BOP Shafer and Be Io Qrufith spoke on public relations. A dinner was served by the home economies class. Three more meetings are planned in Stockton and Mt Carroll, with members from Carroll, Daviess, and Stephenson counties.
A noted author presents a comedy titled Thanksgiving Play Ready, staged at Shimer College. The play is billed as the season’s first offering, with anticipation for strong audience turnout and favorable reviews.
Rural drama and music contest set for Lanark January 7. Frances Shimer College campus theatre hosts Thanksgivings play by Green Curtain Dramatic Club on Thanksgiving night featuring a large cast. Plot centers on Mr Ames and Miss Stuart with Florence Stuart, humorous romantic misadventures, and theatrical intrigue. Tickets 30 cents adults 25 cents students. Also notes county plan meeting in Milledgeville December 7 and other district educational events alongside local club and scout activities.
Isabel Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs James Smith of Savanna wed Vernon Swingley son of Mr and Mrs Joe Kebb of Savanna in a single ring ceremony at Community Church. Rev T Stuart Clewerath officiated with attendants Miss Allen Lindley and Gervase Smith. Swingley works at Savanna Ordnance Depot and they plan to reside in Savanna.
County Junior College presents Booth Tarkington play Intimate brief on Dramatic Club stages Thursday November 15. Licenses include Verne Swingley and Isabelle Smith of Savanna, Kenneth Williams and Frank Brett of Carroll, Clarence Christiansen and Helen Neis of Savanna, Gail Williams of Red Falls and Phyllis Messner of Dixon.

Judge Davis presided over the November term of circuit court with Judge Prince ton at Mr. Carroll. Most cases were routine and disposed of. he expected to return Friday. A case remains set for trial requiring the services of the petit jury, with Helen M. Spencer listed. Chadwick was granted a divorce from Merl Spencer Chadwick on a charge of desertion at Monday’s session.
