A scrambled report notes two individuals involved in a brief disturbance at a local event. Police responded and separated parties as witnesses described a chaotic scene. No injuries were reported, and investigators continue collecting statements.
In a letter from John A. Lampoon, president of the Farmers Educational and Cooperative Union, farmers applaud some steps but warn that days of hardship persist. The note urges faith in President Roosevelt while criticizing the lack of real recovery measures. It also discusses Armistice Day reflections, farm unity, and the need for a strong cooperative movement to curb exploitation by outside interests.
James J Sheridan announces a registration drive for unemployed workers in Thomson Carroll county with about 374 local jobs anticipated and York township quotas around 45. Ex service members with dependents get preference. Registration Friday Nov 24 at Town Hall Thomson from 9 am to 4 pm. No charge.
A gloom fell on Manning as Mrs. Hall aged 78 died at her Third Street home Monday morning. Born Emerne Williams May 29 1846 in Sherburn Vermont she moved West with her family and later settled near Manning in 1875. A civic and social figure she aided those in need with kindness and lived quietly with her husband a Civil War veteran until his death in 1918 leaving ten sons and three daughters.
The Church of Christ schedules morning worship at 10 am and a sermon titled Two Contracts at 11 am. A Union Thanksgiving service will be held at the Methodist church with three ministers giving short talks. The church invites young people to a party in the annex Friday night and a Sunday evening meeting for all not attending other meetings.
Rev W G Aitken leads Thanksgiving themed services at the Baptist church with special music by L Griswold and P Wilt. Sunday school for all ages includes a la Tinton service at the Methodist church. Additional talks on Thanksgiving by Rev Todd Bruce and Aitken, plus a prayer meeting and Bible study at Edison Hollands. Women’s aid and Live Wire class meet. a social program features music and readings. December Sunday school social committee named. Sid society hosting all day meeting at Gelwicks home near Milledgeville.
The Methodist church outlines a 10:00 Sunday shoot, 41:00 morning worship, and a 2:30 probation class. A 7:30 Union Thanksgiving service features Rev. Todd on the historic setting of Thanksgiving with other pastors. An afternoon social with 33 members and hostesses followed. A December 2 charity event is planned, and a future League gathering will meet at Palisades State Park for a Thanksgiving service and a following Wiener roast at 3 PM.
Catholic morning services listed for 8 30 with ideal Sunday school at 10. Evening worship at 7 40. Argo Methodist morning service at 9 30 and Sunday school at 16 16. Evening service well attended with Mr Manus history talk on Holy Land. LeRoy Foltz read scripture. Alvin Hook sang Come Thou Almighty King and Helen Kenyon read The Model Church. Sterling Public Finance led by Stertock Finanor Gonmann of Savannates buys control and will operate both comer Walter Serteck of Serum to oversee appointments.
Ernest Whitney hosted a party for sister Wilma Cole by the Chastian church aid society. A comforter was presented, gifts given, luncheon served, and attendees included Mrs. Tousley Elsie Tousley and many others. The event celebrated Wilma Cole’s birthday with a warm community gathering.
Merchants sponsor two fast games at York gym with an Alumni versus Thomson Independents opener and a main event Thomson Independents against the Fulton Legion team from Fulton. Fulton Juniors beat Thomson Y. C. H. S. 21 to 14 on Fulton court with box score listing players and points.
Funeral services for George Sucher 77 retired Fair Haven farmer were held from the home and Hope Evangelical church with Rev. S. G. Brierly presiding. He died November 20, 1933 at his son’s Sterling home after a stroke earlier in the week.
A garbled local notice lists residents and their ailments. John Balk, Cherie Lamb, Mrs Clara Lawrence, Mrs Inve Martindale, Dexid McWerthy, Adam Hetase and others are described as ill with flu or cold. One transport note mentions Mrs Hetase arriving by ambulance from Savannah.
The Burlington and Milwaukee railroads seek permission to abandon miles of track between Ayers tower and Ebner tower and have Milwaukee Road trains run over the Burlington lines. If approved the Thomson Milwaukee depot would close, raising taxes and harming Sandridge School. York Township faces an annual loss estimated around four thousand dollars. Citizens urged to oppose the railroad shift and support local commerce.
Y C H announces a basketball schedule listing games from November to March with locations in Elizabeth Mt Patrell Chadwick Cordova Shannon Muledgeville and other sites. Honor for Mrs Joe Turney notes a birthday dinner hosted by Mr and Mrs Russ Gleason with a large guest list including Turney family members and relatives from Davis Worrson and Galesburg.
A recent school meeting in the gym featured science and English class updates. Students listed include Ramona Lewis Mildred Bower Helen Ken von Mazel Machael Jin DeKaio Velma Johnson and Mildred Btes. Teachers rotating duties were Evelyn and Dorothy Holm for math, Mary Switzer for lenses and commercial geography, and Miss Thomas for American history. Margaret Bower attended Clinton high school homecoming while the junior class staged a play at Ideal Wednesday. Oral reports and themes were planned in English II and IV with senior book reports due Friday.
An old fragment announces Smith's Store visit on Friday and mentions special sales and a free turkey promotion. It references Mr. Smith's Thursday evening statement about Thanksgiving dinner offerings and advertises savings on items for a bountiful holiday meal.
Mr and Mrs Weskey Kness attended the funeral along with Low Kness and Adam Kness. George M. Fair, a prominent farmer of Haver Township, Michigan, was identified as the former Lucinda Kness.
Tony Ladies at the T N F club are meeting today for an all day meeting at the home of Mr Laura Sulexw Mrs Jach nropi assisting hostess. Tibera Newwickers met Tuesday afternoon with 27 members and one visitor present. Refreshments of hamiches chocolate cake and tea were served at 139 Pom instead of the usual hour of 200 Ors.
