Babson Park Massachusetts November 3 column argues inflation results from excess currency and debt. Five causes listed include coin clipping and extra paper money. Warns postwar rise in prices effects on fire equipment and wages, urges early municipal purchases and stronger fire protection demand.
Thomson residents report weekend travel and family gatherings. Kenneth Kemmer and son Steve visited relatives in Galesburg while Mrs Willis Stage and Vernon and Ted Storm spent Sunday in Chicago with Pasavant hospital family.
The Holland and Pratt herd of 14 grade Guernseys and Holsteins led the Carroll County dairy herd improvement association with an average 30.3 pounds of milk per cow. No. 2 in line was Harry Tallman’s 13 cows averaging 38.7 pounds of fat and 909 pounds milk. High individual cow was Mabel, owned by John Derver, with 91.5 pounds of fat and 1,826 pounds of milk.
Argo News notes gatherings as Verne Kaufman and family visit his mother in Rockford while Emma Eslinger joins Lloyd Smith in Morrison for meals. Guests include Blaine Smith, John Hook, Clarence Sack, Ray Cooper, Joe Warfield, Vera Coffman, and many others drifting between Argo and surrounding communities.
Mr and Mrs Lynn Babcock of Sterling spent the weekend with the Rupple family. Mrs Gipe Mrs Wilbur Hall Chadwick Mrs Edith Sheldon Denver and Mrs Hattie Greeley visited Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Lena Stagg.
Savanna High School topped Fulton High 26 to 0 to close the 1944 season Friday night. Savanna scored in the first, third and fourth periods to seal the victory.
R. S. Wiley a retired Carroll county farmer is named a member of the Carroll county war price and rationing board announced by district headquarters at Moline.
L. E. Phillips reports Savanna Lions club that the state bought the N Y A barracks at Mississippi Palisades State Park near Savanna from the federal government. The postwar plan totals 521000 for park upgrades including cabins, lodge, roads, water and electric systems, and recreation areas. acquisition endorsed by the Savanna Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and city officials.
Wade Ben Eldredge 40 of Savanna died Wednesday morning November 1 in a Milwaukee hospital after a week there. The body returned to Savanna for services with burial at Evergreen Cemetery Sabula. He was born October 2, 1904 in Savanna and attended Lake Forest college and Des Moines School of Pharmacy. He worked as a chemical salesman, married Lillian Parsons and had two sons. He leaves his widow, two sons, his mother, a sister, and other relatives.
During the week of October 30 through November 4, 1944 the Carroll county farm machinery rationing committee issued purchase permits for corn pickers to Spencer Henderson, Joe J. Sikkema, Clarence Gieson, Samuel Martz, and Robert Stoner.
Mrs. Gladys Cate and Lt. Hubert Cate were entertained at dinner Monday at the John Noordhoff home. Sunday visitors in the Paul Smith home included Mr. and Mrs. James Morgan and family of Chadwick Les Wall of Clinton and Mary Wallace. Mrs. Wheeler spent the weekend in Lee Center with her mother Mrs. Maude Ford.
Cpl Arthur Schober stationed at Savanna ordnance depot was arrested after a Winkler jewelry store employee in Mt Carrell identified him as the man who passed bad checks on Oct 14. Merchants in Savanna Mt Carrol later confirmed, with cases spreading Oct 7 Oct 29, all while he wore army uniform and showed a pass. Authorities requested his transfer for trial.
Mrs. Mason Gunn, wife of S. Lt. Maron A. Gunn of Savanna, was killed Tuesday October 31 in a car accident near Albany New York. The message to her parents said the crash happened while en route to her parents home in Albany. Funeral services were held Friday. the couple married September 25 1944 and lived in Stormville New York.
Licenses were issued for Donald W. Clemmons of Proving Grounds and Frances E. Brennan of Savanna, and Benj Mesenbrink Jr and Edna L Johnson of Mr Carroll. Sheriff Eber Shepherd investigated Halloween vandalism at Thomson including the Yolk Cafe sign and damage at nearby rural schools near Lanark, incidents occurring sometime before Halloween.
The Grange elected new officers including Kenneth Krempel as master and Lawrence Halfman as overseer at last Thursday night’s gathering. Mrs. Howard Baker was named lecturer and steward, with Ernie Burkey as assistant steward and June Farthing as chaplain. Virginia Farthing and Grace Farthing were named Pomona and Ceres respectively, with Mary Ellen Halfman as lady assistant steward and Marshall Farthing on the executive committee for three years. A social time followed with lunch.
Pvt. Carl Lahre, 25, son of Mr and Mrs William Lahre of Savanna, has been missing in action in Italy since October 15. A war department message to his wife said further details would follow by letter.
A two story frame house owned by Donald Hall in Woodland township burned about 4 p m Wednesday November 1. The unoccupied structure likely caught from a spark carried by wind while Hall tended nearby weeds. Loss about 2500, partially insured.
Donald E. Miller a 17 year old and Donna J. Sturtz 12 from Lanark Carroll county will exhibit Hereford and Angus Short horn calves at the Chicago Market Fat Stock and Carlot Competition at the Chicago Stock Yards December 2 to 7. Miller and Sturtz will show in the Junior Live Stock Feeding Contest as part of the event with prizes funded by Union Stock Yards and transit Co and breed associations. Entries for individuals closed November 1 and carload lots on November 25, according to B H Heide manager of the International Live Stock Exposition.
Savanna Legion Post No. 148 reports 100 members enrolled as of noon November 1, including eight new members and 92 renewals. The post set a goal of a new all time high by Armistice Day 1945 and names Ralph E. Buckman as new post commander with John Bertoncella and Sidney C. Anderson as senior and junior vice commanders. Members urged to mail or deliver dues to adjutant A. M. Greison or to the membership chairman at 223 Main street and 222 Clay street respectively.
Three precincts narrow edge for the Democrat ticket as GOP county candidates win large margins. State’s attorney J. L. Brearton 5962 to 2275 over W. G. Kent, circuit clerk Cheeter Cramer 500 to 2194 for D. G. Hanna, and coroner Dr. J. B. Schreiter 6102 to 2153 for A. A. Casking. Voters scratched ballots for state representatives, selecting three votes for either party candidate.
Miss Jean White Hatfield and Cpl. John Allison Jr. wed at First Methodist Church Clovis New Mexico in a single ring ceremony attended by Lt. C. Riggs and Lt. J. Timmons. Paula King and Robert A. Kelsey also married in Jersey City and Savanna. Dorris Bowers and Willis G. Linker joined in marriage at Fort Meade Maryland.
Mrs Rose Sheridan and family attended a memorial at Immaculate Conception church for Sgt Robert Folliard who was killed in action September 15 in Holland. He served three years, was 26, and had been overseas two years as of last August. He is survived by his parents a sister and three brothers including Pvt Thomas Folliard in the South Pacific.

The notice notes visits by Mr and Mrs Jr Faulkner to Maquoketa Iowa and Mrs Franklin Fehler donating blood in Chicago. Mrs Henrietta Sikkema of Fulton is staying with her son Jerry Sikkema in his home for a couple of weeks.
Carroll county backed the GOP in Tuesday voting with a majority for Dewey over Roosevelt and for Green over Courtney in a close governor race. Early tallies show Dewey leading by about 200 votes in the county and Republicans winning key statewide offices as Roosevelt secures national reelection. Local results list precincts, candidates, and vote counts for president, senator, governor, and other state posts.
Carroll County Tuberculosis Testing ended this week with 309 seniors, eighth graders, teachers, and janitors tested. Of these, 25 reactors were positive and 284 negative. Positive cases were x-rayed. results by location include Mr Carroll 57 tested with 9 positive, Savanna 57 tested with 9 positive, Thomson 24 tested with 1 positive, Lanark 56 tested with 2 positive, Shannon 30 with none, Chadwick 24 with none, Milledgeville 29 with 4 positive. Funded by Carroll County Tuberculosis Association from Christmas Seal sales.
Mrs. Frances Lego of Savanna spent Sunday and Monday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Carl Robinson. They were guests in the Henry Eubanks home at Milledgeville on Sunday.
