Carroll County Farmer Institute Honors Dairying Speakers

The 1939 Carroll County Farmer Institute announces speakers for the men’s session in Chadwick from November 24 to 26. Prof L Mosher of Illinois will headline the men’s program with J C Nisbet of Fort Atkinson speaking on dairying. Exhibits are invited but limited per exhibitor. premiums are listed across divisions for corn, rye, oats, and other crops, plus a 4-H club design competition.

Rural schools awarded state certificates and renewals

Seven rural schools in the county received certificates of recognition from the state education department at a recent teachers institute. One school earned a supreme rating, while other renewals included Mission Ridge School and several others such as South Elkhorn Locust Grove Plum Grove Hitt Maple Grove Mickory Grove.

High Quality Cattle Show Records Top Milk and Butterfat

Purebred dairy cattle led October rankings in the county dairy herd improvement report by tester Russell Hatl. Five purebred Holsteins owned by Ben Williamson earned top honor with 721 pounds of milk and 31.9 pounds of butterfat. no cows were dry. Second went to W. S. Warnock’s five purebred Guernseys at 655 pounds milk and 30.5 fat, no dry cows. Rush Carroll’s 23 purebred Holsteins were third at 718 milk and 28.2 fat, with several cows dry. Fourth was Stransdale No. W’s 65 Holsteins at 745 milk and 26.7 fat, with two dry cows. John Derrer’s 25 purebred Holsteins ranked fifth at 711 milk and 26.4 fat, five cows dry.

Sealed bids invited for federal lands along Mississippi

Sealed bids will be received at the district engineers office Rock Island Arsenal until 2 p m November 13 for rental of government owned properties along the Mississippi river. Lands on the Illinois and Iowa shores and river islands between Dam 12 and 12 are available. Leases may run up to three years with a minimum bid of 15 dollars per year. District engineer may supervise use and access the land at any time.

Carroll Grid Team Seals Sixth Straight Win

Mt Carroll high school grid stars secured their sixth consecutive victory with a 12 to 7 win over Aquin high school at Preeport. Kuhleman scored early on a short plunge after a f rent ling miscue and added a second TD on a 5 yard reception from Cyonistec. Aquin replied late with a short run and a running extra point. Mt Carroll closes season Saturday at Galena.

W Moyer Savanna Man Found Dead At Home

Warren Moyer a telegraph operator on the Milwaukee railroad was found dead by fellow workers at his North Third Street Savanna home. Coroner ruled gas asphyxiation. jury found suicide due to ill health. He leaves a brother Grover Moyer of Laramie and cousin Judge Q M Grove of Mt Carroll. He had heart trouble for over a year and visited Rochester, Minnesota for examination.

Four Escape Unhurt When Car Overturns Near Lanark

Four Mt Carroll residents escaped injury when their car overturned after leaving an Eastern Star meeting in Music City. Walter Hawk drove, with passengers Mrs. P. F. Grove Virginia Wachtel and Jimily Turnbaugh. Wachtel cut her foot stepping from the wreck.

Feeders Banquet Planned in Mt Carroll November 28

Plans are under way for a live stock feeders banquet announced by Carroll Farm Bureau officials. November 28 is set as the date with Mt Carroll tentatively the location. H J Gramlich of Chicago secretary of the American Shorthorn Breeders Association will speak that evening. Mrs Enna Howe of Morrison visited Ray Moyer home Tuesday.

Lanark Youth Wins Trip to 4-H Congress

Lanark youth Maurice Guenzler is named among 45 Illinois 4-H members awarded a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago December 1 to 9 during the International Live Stock Show. The event honors superior club accomplishments as about 1,200 4-H members nationwide and from Hawaii participate annually.

Arrest Driver After Collision At Mt Carroll

Charles Larsen of near Mt Carroll was arrested at six o clock Saturday night by Mt Carroll marshal Carlos Johnston after Larsen s car collided with two other machines at the county seat. Coleman miles of Mt Carroll drove one of the vehicles and the other driver s identity was not learned. Larsen was held in the city jail and Johnston swore out a warrant for his prosecution by county authorities.

Blaze near Lanark destroys barns and livestock losses

Fire at Clarence Paschal farm four miles west of Lanark causes about 25000 dollars in damage. Two barns a silo straw stack and most farm machinery burn. 100 tons of hay 1800 bushels oats and several livestock perish. House and other small buildings saved by Lanark and neighbor help. Fire started by spontaneous combustion and spread quickly. insurance covers about half the loss.

Carroll Farmers Seek Benefit Payments This Year

Carroll county notes show more farmers seeking benefit payments from AAA this year. Purebred dairy stock leads county dairy herd production in October. Four Carroll 4-H members named in county list. Three Carroll boys enter cattle in Chicago show. Seven rural schools receive state education certificates. Army air defense demo, two enlistments, and theft and traffic incidents reported in Mt. Carroll area. Jury verdicts on death and other local items are noted.

County Tax Distribution and Local Murder Case

Final distribution of 1938 county taxes totaled 83,744.87 with 94.94 percent collected. The sheriff reported a 21-year-old son accusing his father William Geiseman of attempted murder after an incident over a Halloween party escort. Geiseman, held on 5,600 bond, appeared before Justice of the Peace Frank Schroeppler. Townships receiving funds included Mt. Carroll, Savanna, Shannon, and York, with varied collection percentages from the previous year.

Three Carroll Boys Enter The International Exposition

Three Hereford baby beeves owned by Carroll county youths aged 10 to 17 comprise the first county entries for the 1939 International Live Stock Exposition at the Chicago Stock Yards. Leland and Donald Zier, aged 10 and 14, of Lanark, and Leonard Dauphin, 17, of Savanna, enter prize-winning steers for the junior fat stock feeding contest. Judging begins opening day December 2 with J Gordon-Davis of Buenos Aires awarding ribbons and selecting the grand champion in open classes.

Four County 4-H Members Honored in Illinois State List

Carroll county 4-H members Paul Doty Joseph Rath Maurice Guenzier and Harry Stengel won outstanding 4-H club member honors from the University of Illinois College of Agriculture 4-H specialists. The four are among 385 Illinois honorees out of 27 000 statewide for leadership record keeping and project work. The 1939 4-H season closes as nearly 300 county members completed projects in farming and homemaking, marking an increase from 1938.

May Purchase More Land for Palisades Park

A report by Savanna Chamber of Commerce notes the probability of acquiring 300 more acres for the Mississippi Palisades State Park north of Savanna. A state public works visit from Springfield spurred progress, with future improvements pending legislative action. Also, Mr and Mrs Denny Etoyre entertained guests at Wacker.

More Farmers Will Get Cash This Year In Carrell County

Officials of the local farm conservation association report that farm benefit payments in Carrell county will reach about 1800, roughly one third more than last year. About 1270 applications are being prepared for transmission to the state office, including 1220 single and 150 multiple form applications. Around 200 applications remain incomplete but are expected to be ready soon for transmittal.

Expect Planting Control Plan To Be Outlined Soon

Federal farm officials expect to announce a 1940 corn production control program within days, outlining a 7 to 15 percent reduction in planting in the Midwest corn belt. Final reduction hinges on the crop reporting board's Nov. 10 estimate. Large surpluses in recent years drive the plan, with 1940 loan rates likely between 57 and 61 cents per bushel. Beneficiary rates may rise as planting cuts grow.

Youth Husks 60 Bushels Of Corn In A Day

Fourteen year old Charles Olson son of Mr and Mrs Ambrose Olson of near Morrison demonstrated last week that he can husk corn as well as many older men. He claimed he could pick 60 bushels in seven hours and proved it in a one man contest watched by neighbors. He finished with 60 bushels and an extra five pounds.
