Set Date For Eighth Grade Commencement

Eighth grade graduation exercises for Carroll county rural schools are set for Tuesday May 31. About a dozen graduates are expected as rural schools consolidate or join larger districts.

Carroll County March Bond Sales Reach $195852

Residents of Carroll county purchased $195 852 in Series E and H United States Savings Bonds in March 1954. Figures from the Treasury Department show 45.4 percent of the county quota met so far, tallied by F. E. Weidman of Mt. Carroll, volunteer Savings Bonds chairman.

One Millionth 75 MM Recoilless Cartridge Completed

At Savanna Ordnance Depot on December 29 1953 at 10 18 AM the one millionth 75 MM Recoilless Rifle Cartridge was completed. Lloyd L Ensch Plant Manager lifted the round and presented it to Harold W Schroeder and Major Paul L Steele with a group of military and civilian onlookers. The obsolete shells are being dismissed and repurposed at about 3.90 per round with no fires or explosions reported.

Salvation Army Rural Service Meeting Set for May 19

The first annual Salvation Army Rural Service committee dinner is planned for Wednesday May 19 at 6 30 PM in the At wood Dining Room Stockton Illinois. Mrs Mery Spencer and son David from Rockville Indiana visited in the home of Mr and Mrs Robert Spencer after visiting Mrs Ralph Anderson in Freeport Deaconess hospital. Other guests included Orval Rahn Clifton Spencer and families at Mrs Kathryn Rahn home with Lyle Bushman Homer Bushman from Sterling. Marianlee Bennett recently stationed at Warren Air Base Wyoming returned home on a several week leave with Wayland Bennett and relatives before reporting to St Paul Minnesota for an 18 month assignment.

Local Youths Win District FFA Awards Across Disciplines

District IT FFA honors announced Tuesday night in Sterling. Bill Spearman Chadwick won small grain production and John Feddersen Thomson won poultry. Other winners include Marlin Jensen Manlius second in small grain and Ronald Kempel Pearl City second in poultry. Auxiliary Of County Legion Holds Session

The Chadwick Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary hosted Carroll County Auxiliary session with 69 members and guests. State Camp For Boys Set Up At Palisades Park

Savanna Depot Invites Public to Armed Forces Day

The Savanna Ordnance Depot invites the public to Armed Forces Day events on May 16 1954 with open house from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm at the depot lying on 13300 acres along the Mississippi. Map Campsite Near Hanover Planned For Girl Scouts

The Jane Addams Council of Northwest Illinois advances a 190 acre Hanover site as a year round camp for up to 100 girls per session. Ray mond Hazekamp led a tour with volunteer committee members to outline unit areas and building sites. The plan follows National Girl Scout criteria and notes wildlife, wildflowers and future development with a May 11 council presentation.
