Fire damages Savanna Burlington yard office in Savanna

Serious blaze at the Burlington yard office in Savanna causes about 1500 dollars in loss and destroys railway records. Clarence Waidelich reported the fire at 10 25 as crews and volunteers fought it for over half an hour with 1000 feet of hose, temp quarters set up in a bunk car.

Tractor Upset Injures Farm Youth’s Narrow Escape

Ralph Adolph youngest son of Albert Adolph narrowly escaped injury when a tractor with a two bottom plow tipped into a roadside ditch Saturday. He drove from the George Adolph farm toward his father’s farm on a gravel road and overturned after getting too close to the ditch. The tractor fell about eight feet and special equipment had to extract it. Adolph jumped clear before the impact.

Parks Open at Savanna on Sunday

Sunday May 1 official opening of Mississippi Pal’s active state park north of Savanna for the 1638 season. New concession building completed but not opened yet. 129 picnic tables and about 386 outdoor fireplaces and grills overhauled. Old Mill park east of town also opened with paving along the north part, softball diamond and tennis courts ready, and fire equipment housed in a new tool shed.

Three Colored Youths Held To June Grand Jury

Three Mt. Carroll CCC camp members, Arthur Moore William Rose and James Moss, were bound over to the June grand jury after a hearing before Justice Frank Schroeppel. They remained in county jail unable to post $1,500 bonds each.

State Music Meet Finals Set For May 6 and 7

The Illinois School Orchestra and Vocal associations will hold state finals at Illinois State Normal University in Normal on Friday May 6 and Saturday May 7. About 5000 students from 140 member schools for orchestra and 116 from 300 member schools for vocal compete. Savanna and Carroll county schools Mt Carroll Chadwick Lanark earned eligibility for finals.

County Medical Society Holds Spring Meeting

The Carroll county medical society gathered in Savanna's Radke dining room for a spring meeting with a 6:30 dinner and program. Dr. Herbert Schultz of Loyal University Medical School spoke on the use of X-ray in treatment, followed by Dr. V. D. Lespinasse of Northwestern Medical School on sulfamilanide. Dr. R. H. Petty of Mt. Carroll chaired the event.

Seven teams form Indian Head baseball league

Amateur teams from Carroll Whiteside counties and Clinton Iowa formed the Indian Head league. Seven clubs Chadwick Fulton Morrison Savannah Round Grove Lyndon and Clinton Demos will start May 15 with 2:30 pm games at Chadwick Lyndon Round Grove Clinton Demos home site noted. Winged by President Red Gardner and officers Eddie Robinson Bill Considine, the schedule includes 25 and 50 cent admission and a Clinton bye with Demons paid 5 dollar guarantees when hosting away games.

New President Named for Utilities Company

Charles H. Bliss named president of American Utilities Service corporation based in Savanna succeeding Perry Crawford who resigned May 1 to join Central Service corporation in Chicago. Crawford led the firm since its organization as a public utility consultants corporation. Bliss comes from 22 years with an investment banking firm and will base his office in Savanna with the head office remaining there.

Trylon to Rise 700 Feet at 1939 New York World's Fair

The triangle shape gains prominence as the 700-foot Trylon is planned for the New York World's Fair of 1939. Architects highlight a tall geometric form to symbolize progress and modern design at the exposition.

Mt Carroll high school athletes won multiple events in a Friday triangular meet at Carroll County track. Chadwick finished second overall with 49.5 points and Fair Haven led in event wins with five firsts, while Mt Carroll secured four. Individual event winners include Hartman and Kuhleman for Mt Carroll in field events and Schreiner and Etnyre in sprints and distance events.

Illinois Bankers to Hold 48th Convention in Springfield

The Illinois Bankers association plans its 48th annual convention at the Abraham Lincoln hotel in Springfield on May 23 24 with top national and state leaders including Senator Edward R. Burke Congressman Henry B Steagall and Earl C Smith headlining. They will discuss banking agricultural and economic issues and push a constitutional amendment to end double liability of state bank shareholders. The event includes a banquet address by Judge Floyd E Thomason and features the state essay winner on preserving the state bank system. More than 200 high school seniors competed for a University of Illinois scholarship. Martin A Graettinger expressed optimism that the amendment will win wide support to maintain credit facilities and fair competition between state and national banks. Carroll Countys Eight Men Named on Federal Jury Panel

Eighty four jurors were ordered to report for federal court in Freeport on Monday May 16 before Judge Charles E. Woodward. The panel includes eight Carroll county men among 74 jurors and numerous defendants in condemnation suits tied to land within pools and reservoirs for the Mississippi nine foot channel project.

Former Resident Dies In Lynn Grove Iowa

Benjamin Shirk aged 72 a former Carroll county resident died at his Lynn Grove Iowa home after a week of pneumonia. Funeral services and burial were held in Lynn Grove. He is survived by his wife formerly of Chadwick a son six children and a sister Mrs Rodney Wells of Mt Carroll.

Appeals Open On 185 Acreage Allotments In County

About 185 farm owners filed appeals at the Mt. Carroll office asking reconsideration of 1938 acreage allotments. The county committee started review Monday, expected to take five days, with decisions mailed next week. Adjustments follow AAA rules and are limited by small allowable margins.

County treasurer disbursed 24700 in spring tax funds on Tuesday to county, township, village and city treasurers. Officials noted more money was available but reports and legal publication certificates were not yet filed. Lima township led with 33 percent collection. others ranged down to 13 percent in Savanna.

Henry Cooley aged 12 from East Savanna Avenue school Savanna chosen Carroll county s most competent school safety patrol boy. He will attend the seventh annual national patrol conference in Washington D C as a guest of the Chicago Motor Club along with Walter Nehrkorn 13 of Savanna. They will receive Outstanding Service medals at a May 5 luncheon in Chicago and then travel by Pullman for the five day conference with sight seeing trips and guides.
