About 125 eighth grade students from rural Carroll County schools are slated to take final year tests Saturday morning May 18 in the Mt Carroll High School building. Tests determine eligibility for high school next fall. last year 111 took them. Superintendent Lawrence E Bruch cautions on exact turnout. Commencement for successful eighth graders is planned at Mt Carroll High School auditorium, with date yet to be set after teachers confer. A speaker will be arranged by Bruch.
Savanna American Legion band issued its summer program last week under manager Alfred Whetzler. The series runs May 24 at Main and Madison, with Wednesday 8 pm shows and Sunday 3 to 4:30 pm sets, concluding September 10 at Old Mill park directed by Coleman Mites of Mt. Carroll.

Certificates from the state department of education were awarded to Union and Olive rural schools in the county. The Union school is taught by Dorothes Ritenour and the Olive school by Dorothy Metz.
Ole Kievan contractor awarded to replace the Oakton road bridge over Plum River northeast of Savanna with a longer, two foot wider bridge taken from Rush Creek northwest of town. The old iron bridge was damaged by last summer’s high water and unused since the concrete Route 8 bridge opened. The plan includes cleaning, painting, new piling and a plank floor.
Blackhawk council of the VFW sets its next gathering in Savanna on June 4. County officials report April old age assistance totals of 431 recipients with an average award of 19.70. Tax collections through May 2 reach 122,689, and a month remains before penalty dates.

Nearly 400 women from thirteen Illinois Federation clubs gathered at Polo's First Methodist Church on April 27 for the district convention. Resolutions opposing involvement in foreign wars were adopted as speakers and club leaders outlined growth, education, health, and public welfare efforts.
Carroll county conservation office reports 1428 of 1721 farms or 82.49 percent signed for the 1939 AAA program as of May 1, accounting for 88.57 percent of total cropland. Fair Haven leads in farm count. Rock Creek has highest participation rate at 92 percent. Washington township has the largest cropland signed up, 95.71 percent.
A brief April traffic record shows no auto fatalities this month, marking a quieter period. Only one fatality has occurred so far this year, according to officials.
