Thomson residents show strong interest in forming a Community Band drawn from high school and junior high members. Rehearsals will be in the evenings with Wednesday concerts, aiming to revive pleasant band memories and boost local activity.
Donald Carpentier of East Moline campaigns in Thomson as a Republican candidate for Illinois Secretary of State. He notes the office now has 3,200 staff, aims to cut at least 200, and highlights duties have increased. He cites a poll view of the GOP gubernatorial race with Ogilvie leading, then Altorfer and Stratton.
About eighty Carroll County residents attended a Friday Republican Women’s Club luncheon in Chadwick Illinois where six GOP candidates spoke. Howard L. Kennedy of Ohio Illinois was chosen by the Thomson Community Unit School District 301 school board as superintendent. He will start July 1 1968 and brings 16 years of administrative experience in Illinois schools and two daughters.
The Thomson Cub Scouts held their annual Space Derby at the old Thompson school gym. Scott Durward won the Grand Championship with his entry, while Craig Dimmick and David Pilgrim took first and second in design. The Thom son Fire Department held its regular meeting on Wednesday night and re elected Myles Haas as fire chief Faye Ashby as first assistant Bruce Groharing as second assistant Howard Potter as captain and Kenneth Woehl as lieutenant for the coming year.
Mrs. Lawrence Weatherwax, local Red Cross drive chairman, reports Thomson drive raised $272.49 against a $240.00 quota, exceeding the goal.
Thomson grade school kindergarten classes toured the local fire station Monday guided by Tom Mode with Howard Potter and Dwayne Bielema of the Thomson volunteer fire department. Students explored trucks and equipment, ran a mock water spray, and learned fire safety through demonstrations and questions, ending with thanks and plans to visit again.
