Four jurors discharged from March grand jury

Four members of the March grand jury were discharged after a Saturday agreement in Dixon before Judge George C. Dixon. The action followed a request by attorney Melvin Finer of Mt. Carroll regarding potential investigations into Finer’s involvement with the Mt. Carroll cemetery board dispute. Finer may appear before any grand jury if he waives immunity. he has since enlisted in the army and left.

Elkhorn Grove Farmer Plans Production For War Effort

George Ernst of Elkhorn Grove township near Milledgeville plans higher pork and milk outputs this year without soil loss. He will add thirteen acres alfalfa and more soybeans, raise winter wheat, expand cattle and pig numbers, apply limestone, conserve soil, and contribute scrap iron as patriotism supports the war. He credits Farm Bureau and cooperative farming for gains. He immigrated from Germany twenty seven years ago and now urges Americans to work harder for victory.

New Courthouse Annex Foundation Underway in Mount Carroll

Excavation for the foundation of the courthouse annex addition in Mt. Carroll is finished. Cheese man Construction Company workers have poured concrete footings for the walls and are erecting forms for the foundation this week.

Dog Tag Priority Changes In Carroll County

Tax paying dog owners in Carroll County will still receive tags for their dogs this year, but the tags are now made of a reddish brown paper composition. The new tags maintain the same size and design as in prior years and apply to all taxed dogs.

Judge Stransky Eyes Illinois Supreme Court Nomination

Judge Franklin J. Stransky of Savanna is expected to win at least 108 425-500 votes on the first ballot at the Illinois Republican convention in Oregon on April 9. Whiteside and Lee counties have instructed their delegations to back him, joined by Carroll Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties. Stransky's career includes long service as a state's attorney and circuit judge, with a record of few reversals and a history of Republican leadership in Savanna and at state and national campaigns.

Yakovich Fatally Injured in Arizona Car Crash

John Yakovich 26 of Savanna and Sgt. Warren Patterson 21 of Kingston died in a head on collision near Glendale Arizona Saturday morning. Three others were killed and two injured in the crash. Mrs. Dan Brkljaci of Savanna, Yakovich sister, received the telegram.

Illinois Women Plan War Program At Meet Today

More than half a million Illinois club women will be represented as the committee of women's organizations and the Illinois state council of defense meets in the Palmer House Chicago to organize a comprehensive war work program. Invitations go to 23 groups with vice chairmen named. Morning reports and discussions aim to enlist all women across home to factory fields including civil protection and victory gardens. Missing Sabula sailor reported after Java naval battle

Reported missing in action is Floyd G. Guyer of Sabula Soda brother of Mrs Lyle Ritchie of Savannah following a naval engagement off Java. The navy department transmitted the missing persons message to his parents.

Mt Carroll Native Ernest Moore 62 Dies at Home

Mt Carroll marks the death of Ernest Moore 62 at his residence after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held at his home and at the First Baptist Church with Rev. R. H. Leitner presiding. Navy Foils Plan to Hook Genoa Power Plant

Navy requisitioned two new turbo generators from the Genoa Wisconsin plant forcing Carroll Rural Electric Cooperative to rely on portable diesel units near Elizabeth. The Navy plans to use the REA plant equipment at a naval base somewhere in the Caribbean.

Savanna Man Suffered Minor Bruises After Auto Collision

Charles Jensen of Savanna was struck by a car Friday evening while crossing Main and Adams streets. He received minor injuries and went to work the next day. The driver stopped and assisted Jensen to a physician's office. the name was not released.

The Carroll County Agricultural Conservation Committee sponsors a Food for Victory Essay contest open to rural school pupils.
