The 25th Annual Farm Census from USDA-Illinois reports 150,900 farms in Illinois on April 1, 1962, down 4,900 from last year, with the average farm size rising to 199 acres from 165 a decade earlier. Population on farms totals 493,297 on 141,616 farms, averaging 3.5 people per farm. The report notes a long term drift of farm numbers downward while farm size expands. The weather outlook predicts light precipitation under two inches statewide and cooler than normal temperatures. Livestock values rise 5 percent to $820 million as hogs and cattle inventories grow. Deer deaths on highways total 747 for the year, up 37, driven by more traffic and deer numbers.
