Carroll 4-C Club Tours Kable Printing Plant

The Carroll County 4 C Club with 33 couples toured the Kable Brothers Printing plant at Mt Morris. Guides led small groups through the press and binding departments, viewing a new color press valued near one and a half million dollars. Following the tour, the group gathered for refreshments at the Kable Inn.

County Red Cross Reports Drive Progress

The Carroll County Chapter of the American Red Cross reports steady progress on the Bi monthly fund drive with $650 received toward a $6575 quota. The Bloodmobile visits Lanark March 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and pleas for donors go to Mrs. H. B. Rahn. First Aid classes in Savanna are ongoing with another planned after Easter. next board meeting May 10 in Thomson.

Pomona and Milledgeville Granges Host Guest Night

The Pomona Grange and Milledgeville Grange hosted a Monday evening event on March 8 with William Hans presiding. Guests were introduced and a varied program followed including group singing, a Schubert serenade, instrumental numbers, humorous reading, vocal performances, and a safety message. The next meeting, led by the safety committee, will be Monday April 12 in Rock Creek Grange hall.

Lease Awarded for Rough Fish Removal at Savanna Depot

A lease for legal removal of rough fish from Savanna Ordnance Depot waters was awarded February 25, 1954, to David E. Putnam of Bellevue Iowa. About 25 local commercial fishermen attended the briefing as Major George Minarik led discussions with U S Corps of Engineers officials. Bidder Putnam, the highest bidder, will operate daylight removal from February 26 to June 30, 1954, with new leases to follow for July 1, 1954.

Court Asked To Order Building Permit For Service Station

A writ of mandamus petition seeks a court order directing Savanna’s city council to approve a building permit for a service station at Main and Adams streets. Mid-Continent Petroleum and several individuals are named in the filing filed Tuesday in Carroll County circuit court. The petition claims months of delay followed by a denial at a council meeting. University of Dubuque accepted students into four fraternities and three sororities with initiations on campus. Dick Stricker of Mt. Carroll pledged to Mu Sigma Beta. Dr. Ross C. King and wife left for Philadelphia for a week with the American College of Chest Physicians.

Freeport Home Show Hosts New Entrance and Displays

The Freeport Home Show opens today at the Masonic temple ballroom with a novel front entrance by the Associated Building Contractors of Freeport. The four day event features floral displays by the Men’s and Freeport Garden Clubs, a St Patrick’s Day table, an Easter bouquet table, 45 booths, demos, prizes over $1,000, and daily free entertainment scheduled by show chairman Charles Taylor. Forreston Man Named District Inspector of Conservation

Forreston resident Paul Beebe age 50 has been named Inspector of District No 2 in the Illinois Department of Conservation. The appointment fills the vacancy created by the death of Leroy Felderman of Galena. District No 2 includes Jo Daviess Stephenson Winnebago Carroll and Ogle counties. Beebe has served the department nearly 13 years and is praised for his record as a conservation officer. The Ogle County officer was appointed June 26 1941 and certified Civil Service June 1 1944.

Big Start Toward Highway on Mississippi

Washington reports a highway bill would allocate 250000 dollars for planning and coordination of a continuous Great River road along the Mississippi from Lake Itasca to the Gulf. The plan, first submitted in 1951, envisions a 2000 mile route using existing highways and levees where feasible, with costs possibly rising to 770 million dollars but reduced by leveraging current infrastructure.

Rabies Inspector Appointed By County Board

At a county supervisors meeting Lee W. Derrer was named rabies inspector with all veterinarians in Carroll County as deputy inspectors. The board also approved a suit with Woodland township against Kraft Foods over a destroyed bridge, and accepted several county reports.
