Fire swept a three story brick building in Savanna housing the Orpheum theatre, Law meat market, three apartments, and the American Legion hall. Estimated losses reach 200000 with limited insurance. Fire started in the basement furnace room, oil burner ignition blamed. Savanna and Clinton fire departments, plus ordnance depot support, fought flames for hours, smoke hampering crews.
Carroll County treasurer Frank Ross reported payments for livestock killed or injured by dogs from March 1 1936 to March 1 1987. Claims totaled 3244.50 with 80 claimants and 80 witness fees, prorated to 63.4 percent. Only about half of dogs reportedly licensed. funds insufficient to cover all claims.

The Farm Bureau's board of directors voted unanimously to aid flood relief for farmers in southern Illinois. A county committee will oversee donations of feed and seed, distributed to farmers in need, with transport arranged to affected counties. Local township chairmen will collect contributions and ensure aid reaches those suffering crop and seed losses.
Luella Reid of Shannon was granted a divorce from Everett Reid of Shannon by Judge Albert E. Manus in Mt. Carroll circuit court. The decree cited desertion. Judge Manus closed the November term and the March term opened on Monday.
Miss Mary Trader and her mother Mrs Grace Trader of Savanna were driving near Chestnut Park when a large hawk attacked the coupe. The bird struck the rear window, then clawed and scratched Mrs Trader while two men, Edward Hayes and William OLeary, followed and reported the hawk stood about five feet from the car.
The Maple Grove school in Saleor township L.8 bu di county received a state education department recognition certificate presented Monday by the county superintendent. The school is one of two to receive such an award, with nine pupils taught by Miss Cordelia Shannon. The school sits south east of Mt Caryl on Route 40, commonly known as the Kingery school.

Committees will meet soon to set bases for individual farms under the 1937 AAA program. County officials confirm soil depleting limits at 325,979 acres and corn acreage limit at 56,228 acres, higher than last year. A county allotment panel meets a state field man March 5 with the board of directors to establish countywide bases, followed by community sign ups and farm-by-farm maps and statements.
In Savanna regional action Fulton defeated Chiarhvnek 25 to 19 while Morrison edged Dubuque 25 to 19. Fulton and Morrison set up a Friday night clash. Elizabeth Inst, Savage, and others play in round two with semi finals Friday and regional final Saturday. Winners advance to the sectional tourney.
W. J. Tehan, sergeant in charge of District One office of the state highway police at Sterling, has been promoted to lieutenant and will continue to work from Sterling headquarters. Several other highway officers have been promoted or assigned to other districts.
