Babson Park Florida February 25 column notes a possible Florida boom after the war with citrus profits, rail and air transport projects, and large growth in yields. It cites low taxes mortgage repayment strength and shifting tourism. It highlights new oil discoveries near Fort Myers and widespread leases by major firms south of Sarasota.
Shannon High School won the district basketball tournament on the home floor by routing Chadwick 67 to 16 in the final after a 11 13 semifinal win over Elizabeth. Chadwick reached the final by beating York Community 42 22 in the opening round. Gene Weber led Chadwick Thursday with 21 points.
A group of Carrol county men reported last week at a Chicago induction center for pre induction physical examinations. Names include Kermit D Shaw Bernard L Diehl Alfred D Law Burton Bogue Robert J Bergman Walter L Baldridge Richard E Poffenberger Andrew C Holt Hans E Jacobsen Kenneth K Lasch and many others.
Mt. Carroll High School defeated Hanover 46-35 after a 12-8 opening, leading 23-17 at halftime and finishing strong 23-18 in the second half. Murney led Mt. Carroll with 20 points as the lightweights won the prelim game 46-35.
Savanna high school cagers defeated Stockton 53 to 36 in the season finale on the Savanna floor. Magaldo scored 22 and Cravatta 20 for Savanna while King led Stockton with 12 points. Stockton reserves won 38 to 32 earlier. The tally by quarter shows Savanna 9 12 16 16 and Stockton 15 9 7 5.
County Triple A chairman Herman Daehler announced the filing window for dairy feed subsidy payments earned in January is extended to March. The prior deadline of February 29 applied to applications for payments earned in November and December as well.
Harold Hersey Savanna, head of the county war council fire division, announces a countywide tin can salvage drive. Cans will be collected in every community and brought to Savanna for shipment. War council officials will meet this month to set the collection date and plans.
Charles Craig 61 died Monday at 4 40 p m at his Mt Carroll home after a heart attack. He was born August 15 1882 in Mt Carroll son of Gilbert M and Mary A Hild Craig. Funeral set 2 30 p m Thursday at Frank Funeral Chapel Mt Carroll burial Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by a son John in Sampson New York Navy two daughters and two sisters. wife preceded him in death.
Jay Robert Packard died shortly after birth on February 24 in Savanna city hospital. Funeral and burial were held in Petoskey, Michigan. Surviving are his parents, paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Vane Packard of Petoskey, and maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Martin Mears of Savanna.
The county farm machinery rationing committee issued permits Feb 21 to 26 for tractors to Philip Queckboerner Ben Wirtjes Donald Janssen William Provant, for manure spreaders to Lester P Kruse Donald C Adolph, for combines to Ernest Michael John Derrer, and for milking machines to Howard L Derrer.
The B and C gasoline ration coupons began distribution Tuesday in Carroll County. The ferally numbered rolls replicate the T series used for trucks since January. Each coupon comes in a cardboard folder with the owner’s name address and vehicle description.
Savanna defeated Hanover 42 to 30 and Morrison beat East Dubuque 50 to 25 in the Mt. Carroll regional opener. Fulton beat Lanark and Mt Carroll trimmed Shannon as district winners advanced to the semi finals.
Second Lieut. John L. Nightingale from Savanna is reported missing in action in Germany since February 10 during his first mission as a bomber navigator. The war department Telegram to his wife in Monroe Louisiana said the plane failed to return. Nightingale, 21, attended Savanna High School and the University of Illinois before enlisting January 1948. He trained in Nashville and Monroe and went overseas in January 1946. He married Elna Swanson of Savanna on April 9 1943.
Miss Eleanor C Morrison daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward A Morrison of Dorchester Massachusetts and Lt Edward B Winston son of Mr and Mrs L A Winston of Savanna were married at 7 oclock Tuesday evening February 22 in the Dorchester Baptist church Rev R D Goodwin officiated The bride a Marine Corps Reserve sergeant and her husband stationed at Cherry Point N Y were present in Savanna with Lt Winston a Savanna native and Savanna High School graduate Also mentions June Fulrath and William James wedding at Mt Carroll with couple to live on a nearby farm
County Clerk W. M. Nive issued licenses to Merle W. James and June E. Filirth of Mr. Carroll and to Allen C. Airhart and Jean M. Nason of Savanna on Feb 29, listing the couples and hometowns.
The county clerk records show many veterans receiving honorable discharges during the present war with some for disability and others for service valued at home. February alone logged 12 discharge entries and more filed earlier. Sheriff Shepherd aided in a Sa vanna investigation of a stolen Kuebler Motor bus abandoned on tracks and later hit by a train. Frank Ross plans to attend a state tax meeting in Springfield in mid March with shipper assessors. Voter registration activity remains high with many address changes and new registrations. in person registration only before the April primary. Nomination petitions for precinct committeemen filed by Spearman, Hartman, Ethridge, all Republicans. In Lee county circuit court Judge Dixon heard partition and sale of 620 acres of Carroll county farm land and a Milledgeville home in a suit by Mrs Cleopatra Spanogle seeking to set aside a prenuptial agreement with Charles Spanogle dated Oct. 20 1937. She claims fraud and lack of disclosure. heirs appear in the case. Judge Dixon placed the matter under advisement and will rule in the March Mount Carroll term.
Herbert Spealman of Chadwick is appointed to the state highway police force and assigned to duty Saturday. He will work in this territory with Officers Steve Adee and Herbert Krahn.
Carroll county’s selective service board anticipates a review of occupational deferments following a presidential order. State and federal directives emphasize deferring non fathers under 26 and prioritizing essential war production and agriculture. Deferment totals show 321 807 granted nationwide as of January end with breakdowns across industry and farming, but state reports note Illinois faces shortages for induction.
Real estate transfers show several warranty deeds. Transactions include Leo Blair to John A. Fisch Wysox township and Laura M. Sherlock to L Orvie Berner in Savanna. Other deeds involve Wallace H. Whigam to Marion Poorman and Gladys York area and Walker additions Milledgeville.
An explosion in a shell loading bay at the Green River ordnance plant Tuesday morning killed Mrs. E. M. Christy of Princeton HI and injured 11 others. Injuries were not serious and most workers returned to duty by day’s end. Officials found no sabotage and estimated property damage under $100. Major Norman E. Gillespie led the inquiry with Stewart-Warner representatives.
Judge George C. Dixon will preside the March term of circuit court in Carroll County starting Monday March 6 with 10 20 a m docket call. Jury reports will follow as needed. The March bar docket lists four new criminal cases two common law cases and 11 chancery cases including The People vs Earl Thompson larceny and rape cases and L B Hussey vs Carlton A Phillips appeal.
A bus owned by the Kuebler Motor Co of Savanna was found wrecked on a Madison Street crossing after being struck by the Burlington North Coast Limited. Police say the vehicle was stolen from Jefferson Street, driven west, abandoned on the track, and damaged with insurance partially covering the loss. No injuries reported. Sheriff Eber Shepherd took fingerprints from the steering wheel to identify the thief.
OPA headquarters in Washington announced Tuesday that ration point costs for pork and several beef cuts will be sharply reduced effective Sunday. Spare Stamp 4 becomes valid for five points March 1 to March 4 to clear cold storage space as markets swell.
A large plate glass window at Beckenkeller pool hall in Mt. Carroll was smashed when a car rolled down a hill and struck the front. The vehicle, driven by an unknown party, jumped the curb after brakes allegedly released, and was owned by Kenneth Law of Mt. Carroll.
Carroll County Dairy Transportation committee chairman Gordie Wolker announces a new requirement. Any milk producer wishing to change markets must fill out a designated form and deliver it to the processor for submission to the committee for action.
A February report to Gov. Dwight U Green shows a total reduction of 2876 Old Age Pension recipients in Illinois with the average grant rising to 29.48 dollars. Carroll county reports 841 recipients and 9446.26 dollars paid for February. Eighty one families received Aid to Dependent Children totaling 848 dollars for 63 children. Everett Wilt Sire Bill Wagner and George Morgan of Chadwick spent Friday evening with Bob Miller.
