Babson warns Boston area readers that housing prices reach speculative highs driven by returning veterans, strict regulations, and union slowdowns. He advises selling unused rental properties and holding owner-occupied homes, noting inflation will rise before a likely deflation era, and suggests delaying new purchases until after 1950 for a more reasonable price.
Bert Thrasher a 57 year old Milwaukee switchman, was struck by an engine in the Savanna railroad yards Saturday evening. His right arm was severed near the shoulder, he bled heavily and endured severe shock. He was switching with a crew when another engine approached, knocking him down as his arm lay on the rail.
Trophies were given for the Lanark event with Charles Meyers Mt. Morris as oldest rider and Kenneth Carbaugh Lanark as youngest. Largest group honors went to Mt. Morris Trail Riding Club and the farthest riders from near Maquoketa Ia. The procession included 138 riders over about 15 miles. The Traum reunion is planned for Sunday June 30 at Old Mill Park Savanna.
John Sehumaker 28 Savanna faced arraignment for rape and the case awaits a motion to quash. Ralph Rogers 38 Mt Carroll pleaded not guilty to resisting an officer. Glen Smith 40 and Ruth Palfrey 25 Savanna pleaded guilty to adultery with probation requests. Jack Harvey 26 Savanna received a one to two year term for a probation-violating larceny case.
Julius J Groezinger 72 died of a heart attack at his farm home in Washington Township five miles north of Savanna after two weeks of illness. Funeral held at Fuller funeral home with Rev Gerhard Fisch er officiating and burial in Massbach cemetery. Born Oct 9 1873 in Massbach Davie ss County Ill married Eda Reese in March 1914 at Galena. Survived by widow son Wilmer daughter Alvina Niles twin grandsons Jack and Jerry Niles two brothers Emil and Oscar and five sisters plus many relatives.
Obituaries record Belle Hammond 83 of Mt Carroll died June 19 after four weeks illness. Funeral at home with burial in Oak Hill. Belle Fish Hammond born 1862 Cook County. survived by two daughters, a son, a brother and a half brother. Also Charles Eshelman 65 of Mt Carroll died June 18 in Chicago. funeral at Mt Carroll First Lutheran Church with burial Oak Hill. Mary Buckley Eshelman born 1880 Warren. survived by husband, three daughters, a son and siblings. Nellie Parsons now living with Mrs Daehler.
The Carroll County Clerk mails voter identification cards to over 8,000 registered voters each year under the permanent registration act. Cards display name, address, and voting precinct. if no move or error, the card may be ignored. If moved or details are wrong, return the form. name changes require in person re registration.
Approximately one fifth of the Rock Tiger conference pastoral charges will see new ministers next year after the Aurora session. Savanna gains Cedrick Pope while Batavia receives Arthur Monkman. Ira Sherman returns as regular pastor of the Albany church. Other district changes include Hagerty at Byron and Stillman and more, with total full membership at 142,110 and church property valued over 25 1 2 million dollars.

Wilma Richards divorced Milton A. Richards by Judge George C. Dixon. Honorable discharges filed include multiple residents of Mt. Carroll Savanna Thomson and Chadwick, with several service branches represented.
Mr and Mrs Fred Olson with Abbie and Ward joined dinner at Pete Matzen home in Clintor Louisiana. Mr and Mrs Herb Spearman traveled to Chicago Tuesday for several days visit.
Carroll county education officials note that over half the rural districts have not reported hiring, while several districts list teachers and monthly salaries ranging from 245 to 1417 dollars. Names include Mot Tet, Jessie Fulrath, June Kingery, Florence Smith, and many others across districts such as Zion, Renner, Strawberry, Woodland, Arnold, and Union.
Richard Allison, 15, Milledgeville, was a prize winning exhibitor at the Chicago Junior Market Lamb Show and Sale held June 14 at the Chicago Stock Yards. The event drew 376 lambs from 68 youths across 17 Illinois counties and two Indiana counties, with four classes offering singles and pens of three five and ten lambs. Allison placed fourth in the pen of three class. top awards went to Laurence McLachan of Earlville who exhibited Southdowns and sold a 90 pound champion at 1.50 a pound. The sale averaged 55 1 2 cents per pound. The Union Stock Yards and Transit Co in partnership with 4 H and Vocational Ag leaders sponsored the show with prizes from the National Suffolk Sheep Association and the American Oxford Down association. A swine show is planned for Sept 25 at the same venue.
Dale Balmer a 46 year old Moline resident suffered severe head and facial lacerations at 12 40 p m Saturday in an automobile collision on Route 80 about three miles north of Thomson. Balmer was in the back seat of a Pontiac driven by Fred Wicklund when struck in the rear by a car driven by James J Bell of Clinton Iowa. Wicklund his wife and son and Bell escaped injury as did Balmer. Both cars were seriously damaged and state officers Herbert Krahn and Allan Williston investigated.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Higbee of New York are due to arrive Saturday for a visit at the C M Kingery home. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Whiney and Jonathan were Sunday dinner guests of Miss Della Cramer in Mt Carroll.

The Chestnut Park school board hires two new teachers Mrs Paul Becker Jr and Mrs Bernard Crist. Becker taught at Washington school last year while Crist has three years of teaching in Scott county Iowa.
The Carroll County Chapter of the Foundation for Infantile Paralysis met at Smith's Cafe on June 20 1946 for its annual gathering. Officers were re elected Nan Collingwood chairman Harold Mackenzie vice chairman Mrs Jess Johns secretary Ruth Nehrkorn treasurer.
Summer weather continues with clear skies and pleasant breezes in the area. A brief shower occurred early Tuesday morning with wind and lightning, but the day remained fair and hot in the sun.

Notable unions include Miss Jane Johnston and Benjamin Mills in Douglas, Dorothy Smith and Glenn Groezinger in Chicago, Alice Hess and Robert Nichols in Milledgeville, Kathleen McCray and William Swift in Savanna, Barbara Durling and Theodore Miles in Chicago, and Ruth Stevens and Donald Sprecher in Rockford.
The 23rd annual Getz reunion gathered 102 people at Old Mill Park on Sunday June 16. A bounteous picnic dinner followed a doxology and noon prayer. President Louisa Proehl welcomed attendees and officers were elected: president Louisa Proehl vice president Walter Getz secretary treasurer Lena Becker. Visitors came from Madison Wisconsin Pasadena California Lockwood Missouri Chicago Glen Ellyn Champaign San Jose Manito Pekin Paxton Forest City Shannon Polo Chadwick Mt Carroll Lanark Savanna and others.
Towns prepare week long Fourth of July events with parades, concerts, and a big fireworks show. In Savanna the VFW homecoming and Amvets Lions club events culminate with Miss Fourth of July at the high school stadium and a fireworks display. Morrison hosts a two day holiday with races games dances and a large fireworks finale.
The annual Carroll County Farm Bureau picnic and 4 H roundup will be held Tuesday August 27 at Old Mill Park Savanna. Livestock exhibits will be in the field east of the park with the speaker platform near the ball diamond. Activities begin at 10 am with livestock judging, a noon picnic dinner, and an afternoon program featuring a band address style show and musical numbers.
Frances Shimer College announces veteran enrollment for September with facilities open to ex servicemen and women. All departments will serve part time and regular day students, focusing on small classes and individual attention. Only veterans from Carroll County and vicinity will be admitted initially due to space. Credits transfer to other colleges and many two year basic courses can be completed locally before transferring. Counselors will assist veterans with housing transportation and college problems.
