Thomson FFA Chapter Wins Second Place in American Heritage Contest

Thomson FFA earned second place in the American Heritage contest at the Illinois FFA convention in Champaign and received a plaque. The prize includes a paid trip for 30 members from eight chapters to eastern historical sites. Thomson will send five boys and advisor William Gengenbach, who also received a top safety award plaque later. New section officers include Lawrence Bruckner as vice president and John Kustes as secretary.

Milledgeville Minister Rev. William Kendall Dies

Rev. William E. Kendall, 84, a retired Church of the Brethren minister from Milledgeville, died June 8 at Community General Hospital in Sterling after a brief illness. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Milledgeville Church of the Brethren with Rev. Glen Shively presiding, burial followed in Dutchtown Cemetery.

Executive Director of Chicago Crime Commission Speaks at York Church

Virgil W. Peterson, executive director of the Chicago Crime Commission, will speak at York Community Church’s second Annual Family Festival on Sunday June 18 at 8 p.m. The event includes a 6:30 p.m. potluck dinner. Peterson, born November 16 1904 in Olds Iowa, has a long FBI career and has authored books on crime and politics. He is expected to provide insights valuable to Thomson and Carroll County residents.

Grandson of Ralph Olds Named For Air Force Academy

Paul Carl Carlson grandson of Mr and Mrs Ralph Olds has been appointed to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He will begin study this summer after finishing his freshman year at University of California La Jolla where he is on the Dean's list. He graduates from La Jolla High School with honors and letters in track and cross country. He plans a career in Basic Sciences at the academy and is a member of La Jolla Presbyterian Church. He is the great grandson of the late Charles Jenkins and Helen Wentling of Thomson.
