The Carroll County Circuit Court will convene Monday June 17 1935 at the Mt. Carroll courthouse with Judge Albert H Manus likely presiding. The docket lists seven new common law cases and nineteen new chancery cases along with six carryover criminal cases.
May results show fifteen Holsteins led Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement as sociation with an average 1839 pounds of milk and 44.2 pounds of butterfat per cow. Weidman’s herd topped class A with 1742 pounds and 73.2 butterfat. Master & Wurster placed second, Winter third, Stransdale No. 1 fourth, Williamson fifth. Sixty-three cows produced over 40 pounds of butterfat. seven separators tested, one loss above 0.05 percent.
Preliminary tabulations from the UG Farm census indicate Carroll county added fifty four farms. On Jan 1, 1935 there were 1,751 farms, rising to 4,6 07 on April 1, 1936. State totals show 232,226 farms June 1, 1935, up from 214,497 five years earlier, subject to downward revision after redefinitions. Whiteside county fell by six to 2,748. Jo Daviess rose by 122 to 2,145.
Federal emergency relief funds allocate 12 675 000 for Rock Island district projects including Lock 13 at Clinton with 2 300 000 earmarked for the lock. Other items cover Lock 14 LeClaire 2 000 000 Lock 17 New Boston 2 000 000 Dam 18 Burlington 2 050 000 Dam 11 Dubuque 3 050 000 Beck river pool Sterling 25 000 and Henderson river diversion 250 000. Work awaits labor provision details before contracts.
Carroll county Illinois Emergency Relief Commission approved a relief project in Wysox township. B B Hawkins submitted the project through township supervisor Goble for road work costing 2424.20 dollars with TERC supplying 1280 dollars. Eight workers will be employed to grade roads clear brush remove stumps open waterways strip and clean gravel pits and set up rock crushing machinery.
Carroll county’s courthouse fountain has been converted into an aquarium again this spring with goldfish adding color and three large eels providing unusual interest. A young bullhead patrols the bottom while the eels stay hidden. The sheriff sponsors the project hoping to stock a variety of fish, cannibals ruled out.
Gilliam pled guilty in county court to relief fraud and was ordered to repay 60 dollars for benefits plus 23.05 dollars in costs. He received probation for one year. The case marks the first relief fraud case in Carroll county. An allotment of 2789.49 dollars was received in Carroll from motor fuel tax May funds, with Illinois counties getting 596,568.50 in total. The state kept 202,760 for interest and retirement of emergency bond issues, and 41,590 for relief bond relief. Dee Gilliam, a colored Burlington employee from Savanna, faced charges for unlawful relief application while working.
Miss Verna Landherr of Sterling assumed duties as relief administrator for the Illinois Emergency Relief Commission in Carroll County. An experienced social worker, she has worked in Chicago and Whiteside County and studied at the University of Town. Clyde Buckingham resigned to take a job in Florida. relief headquarters are at Savanna where Miss Landherr will reside.
Carroll county Boy Scouts announce summer camp at Fish Lake near Sauk City Wisconsin with opens June 16, moved up from June 28. Reservations list Thomson Savanna Mt Carroll units and dates from June 16 to July 14 totaling several scouts and leaders across four camps.
In the probate court, letters of administration for the estate of William Anton, deceased, were granted to Peter Demas. Bond of 2000 pounds was filed and approved.
The York Community club named a five person executive committee to plan the annual Melon Day in Thomson. The group includes Bayard R. Lewis as chairman with Garrett Belhouse Irve Martindale Charles Groharing and Foster Stage. A date will be announced in August pending crop timing. plans call for a larger event with additional treats and ongoing community cooperation.
The existing school building was destroyed by fire last winter. Construction has begun on a new two story frame house with a basement measuring 2 3246 ft and a 12 foot ceiling. A modern hot air heating plant with ventilation will be installed. George Dachkr is the contractor. completion targeted for September 1.
Tarrell county farms grow as comsup reports a rise in farm numbers over five years. Officials note steady gains in agricultural activity and community programs, with planning underway for a August gala and local celebrations.
Turrell County Emergent Relief Office reports a 12 man enrollment for CCC starting after June 15. Changes set eligibility for ages 18 to 22, re-enrollment for veterans with four to thirteen months in camp, and relief guardianship as a condition.
The Illinois Emergency Relief Commission assumed responsibility for unemployable people on relief in York and Rock Creek townships this week. Unemployed cases were taken from the township supervisor, who remains responsible for those needing relief. Other Carroll county townships already under relief include Savannah Freedom Mr Carroll and Wy WX. IHRC officials met grocers and doctors at Thomson Town Hall to explain policies and answer questions, with a similar meeting in Lanark. All new applications for relief under IERC are expected to be completed this week.
Tax money totaling 112000 was distributed last week to townships, supervisors, cities, and school districts in Carroll County by County Treasurer Frank L. Ross. This third and final pre September 1 distribution for 1935 brings yearly total to 306125 from 1954 tax collections, excluding back taxes. York township received 8650 this round, Fair Haven 5500, with several other townships listed including Savanna 42900 and Mt. Garrel 15700, totaling payments to numerous divisions.
Real estate transfers were recorded in the clerk Valentin Boerner's office this week. John W. Klitz and wife transferred property to Wm. W. Johnson, including Milledrevisie, Myers Sra add, Wi-2 lois 4.5 and bik. 3.
Carroll county supervisors met in regular session at the court house in Mt Carroll for the semi annual meeting. Bills were approved and county officers reports reviewed showing detailed disbursements and balances for circuit clerk treasurer and sheriff accounts. County fund balance May 31 1935 was 30088 58 with 56004 92 on Dec 1 1934.
The Commercial club set August 8 as Cheese Day in Chadwick at a Friday meeting naming committees for the celebration. The note mentions a long-standing community event with songs, games, and a reunion of a large fly, along with plans and speeches for the 1936 celebration.
