Spanning a Century with Another Family Farm
A writer visits Walter and Mabel Martin's 140 acre farm 3 miles west of Shannon Illinois on Route 72. The Martins, in the fourth generation, recall 1868 purchase for 500 dollars by Henry Martin and a 1910 real estate tax bill of 48.80. They describe family notes of 19th century commerce, farming seasons and planetary lore, plus modernizing repairs after storms and fires. The piece reflects on rural change and a lasting hope the farm may pass to the next generation.
