County Deaths From Heat Take Three in Salem Area
Daggert 3, farmer of Salem Township, died of heat prostration at Savanna City Hospital after collapsing July 15 while working five miles south of Mt. Carroll. Williams 83 of Savanna died at his son’s home after a yearlong illness. Atkins 78 of Savanna, resident at county farm, died of possible heart attack linked to hot weather. Burial services conducted in Mt. Carroll and Savanna cemeteries with local ministers officiating.

Work on Lock 13 Halted by Break in Power Cable
Work on Lock No. 13 south of Thomson was halted Monday evening when a power cable under the river broke. Loss of power to the pumps allowed water to rise four to five feet inside the dam, stopping operations until Tuesday afternoon. Company and contractor crews lifted the cable from the river bed to repair it, with pumps brought back online and water lowered before crews resumed work.

Two Men Taken to Vandalia State Penal Farm
Henry Cook of Savanna and Harvey Miller of Lanark, Carroll County men, violated parole terms and were sent Monday to the Vandalia state penal farm to begin serving. Cook had a Saturday hearing before Judge O M Grove in Mt Carroll, with probation vacated and a four month Vandalia sentence ordered. Miller’s hearing followed, unable to pay a $300 fine and costs, and he was remanded to the penal farm to work off the fine at $1.50 per day.
