Landmark mill doomed by cave-in marks county seat start

The old Mt Carroll mill, Carroll County’s first landmark, is slated for razing after a cave-in caused by Waukarusa flood waters. Owner Glen Johnson’s 40 by 60 foot, 60 foot high structure housed milling gear. built in 1842 by N Halderman, it helped found Mt Carroll and drew the county seat from Savannah in 1843.

More Cattle From County Sell High On Chicago Market

Carroll county cattle sold at top and near top prices on the Chicago Stock Yards last week. Fred Wilhelm of Shannon consigned 52 prime steers averaging 1279 pounds that sold for 12.75 per cwt. Paul Woessner of Shannon sold 49 steers averaging 095 pounds per head for 12.00 per cwt. Prices soared to new highs with a midweek peak of 12.89 per cwt for Nebraska steer purchases and top hogs at 10.20.

Fewer Tax Objections By Railways In Carroll County

Railways through Carroll county, including Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific and Chicago Burlington and Quincy, filed fewer objections to 1937 tax bills this year with hearings slated for fall. Objections target Mt Carroll and Savanna library taxes, town taxes in Cherry Grove and Savanna park levies, Wysox park, Milledgeville corporate tax, and a Mt Carroll waterworks item as vague, multiple, or improperly levied under state law. No objections were filed to other taxing bodies.

Army Reserve Quota Set for Sixth Corps Area

Colonel John B. Shuman announces the Sixth Corps Area quota for the Regular Army Reserve at 1142. The six states Illinois Wisconsin and Michigan comprise the area with eight other corps areas also setting quotas. Eligible are former Regular Army personnel honorably discharged within three years single and under 36. Reservists receive 2 dollars monthly and face potential active duty in emergencies. enlistments are rapid nationwide.

Stolen Mt Carroll Car Recovered Behind Algona School

An automobile stolen from the Dan Hurley home in Mt. Carroll Friday night was found Saturday morning behind the Algona schoolhouse. Sheriff Eber Shephard and Mr. Hurley recovered it, with the tank nearly full, indicating it had been driven only to Argo-Fa.

Preliminary work begins at Savanna Ordnance Depot

Preparatory work started Thursday on enlarging and improving the Savanna Ordnance Depot with nearly a million and a half dollars in allocations from PWA Army supply and WPA funds. Ninety two igloo and smokeless powder magazines will be built, plus 12 miles of railroad and 10 miles of macadam roads, under construction supervisor Lt Joseph Gill and civil engineer Edwin Stevenson. About 160 men are employed in clearing and outlining sites as bids near and a one year timeline is set for completion with local hiring encouraged.

Carroll County Council of the American Legion will meet Monday night July 25 in Mr. Carroll. William Ritenour, Milledgeville, county commander, says plans are being arranged and urges Legionnaires to attend. After the business portion there will be entertainment social time and refreshments.

Old Settlers Reunion Cancelled in Lanark this August

Carroll county will not hold its annual Old Settler s Reunion in Lanark due to parking shortages from street tearing for sewer work and conflicting events. Officials announce the 65th reunion will be held in 1939 on the third Thursday in August, with plans to make up for this year. The 4-H Club Roundup and Farm Bureau picnic will still occur in Lanark on Friday, Aug 26 at the city park.

Three Youths Survive Car Wreck Near Savanna Route 80

A Sunday night crash south of Savanna on Route 80 left three youths with minor injuries. Driver Marvin Hartman of Pearl City sustained a gash needing stitches and arm and body bruises, while passengers Betty Peterson of Savanna and Wilma Dyer of Chicago had a sprained ankle and arm and shoulder bruises. The sedan rolled three times, landed upright after leaving the road at a curve, and none were ejected. A motorist took Hartman and the others to a Savanna physician for treatment.

Motor Club Group Visits Parks in Savanna

Sponsored by the Chicago Motor Club a Get acquainted motorcade from Chicago toured Savanna for a picnic in Old Mill park and a trip through Mississippi Palisades state park north of town. Attendees included representatives from Chicago western suburbs St. Charles Sycamore Oregon Mt. Morris and Mt. Carroll escorted by state highway police. Savanna welcomed the group with Ivan Shaver steering the chamber of commerce effort. The trip aimed to acquaint members with Route 64 and local scenery.
