Lena Institute Program Set for July at Lena Camp Grounds

The Lena Institute of the Rockford District Woman's Society of Christian Service will be held July 20 to 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST at Lena Camp Grounds with the theme Except the Lord Keep the City. The program features teachings on Jesus words to women, city life studies, youth work, and global topics, led by Rev. C Friedhoff Carlson, Mrs. Irving Bruhn, Miss Mona Kewish, and others. Marriage Licenses Issued At County Clerk Office

Three licenses to wed were issued this past week by the county clerk. Names include John Morson and Phyllis Jones of Savanna, Gerald L. Artman and Virginia Koch of Shannon, and Donald E. Lemire of St Paul Minnesota with Barbara White of Lanark. Additional licenses and deeds involve transfers in Savanna Shannon and Washington areas with multiple property and interfamily arrangements noted.

Social Security Office Visit Schedule In Savanna

A Rockford district Social Security representative visits Savanna on the fourth Wednesday each month after 12:30 p.m. at the Savanna post office. July 28 August 25 and September 22 are listed dates. Arraign Two Men In Circuit Court

Two men indicted by the June grand jury were arraigned last week in circuit court before Judge Leon A. Zick. No plea was entered and both men got ten days to file preliminary motions. George Tudbat Jr. faces burglary and larceny for a gas station theft in Savannah March 6. Pussell Miller is charged with burglary and larceny for breaking into John Kistlemacher’s home June 16 and taking articles.

Picnic for Guests from Cartridge Missouri

Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Davis of Cartridge Missouri have been guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Burkholder and relatives. They were entertained for a picnic supper Friday evening in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stralow. Hold Three Youths To Grand Jury On Burglary Charge

Three Sterling youths Raymond Hemming er 17 Clinton Lilly 17 and Ron ald Lilly 16 were bound over to the Carroll county grand jury on a burglary charge. They were accused of breaking into the Savanna Flying Service office at Stransdale Air Park near Savanna and allegedly took 300 dollars in cash and a guns collection. Whiteside county officers turned the youths over after they were found near a box containing 18 guns. Bonds of 500 dollars each were posted and the youths were released.

Youth Injured In Auto Truck Crash Friday Evening

Morrison-Wayne Smith of Prophetstown sustained extensive facial lacerations when his northbound car rear ended a light truck driven by Richard Dale at the Whiteside Carroll county line Route 78. Dale’s truck hit a telephone pole after being struck. Smith was taken to Morrison hospital. Dale was checked for chest injuries.

Thomson high school gym hosts Carroll County 4-H show July 21 and 22 with 300-plus projects from 4-H girls including handicraft table covers flowers clothing and foods Judging of exhibits Wednesday and activities Thursday Clothing revue starts at 10:00 a m Thursday public program Thursday afternoon features 4-H demonstrations Plow Girl beauty contest finals and International Farm Youth Exchange with four youths from India.

Grange Booster Picnic Sunday At Oregon

The 3rd annual Grange Booster picnic will be held Sunday July 18 at the Ogle county fair grounds in Oregon. Sponsored by northern Illinois Granges the all day event opens at 11 a m with Beatty H Dimit Master of the Pennsylvania State Grange as guest speaker. Annual Red Cross Meeting in Carroll County

The Carroll County Chapter of the American Red Cross held its annual meeting Monday July 12 in St. Pauls parish house Savanna with representatives from Mt. Carroll Milledgeville Chadwick and Savanna. Reports showed 127 in active service 65 veterans and 21 civilians aided. 354 pints of blood collected over three Bloodmobile visits. 27 volunteer nurses and 98 other workers. 221 hours donated in production clerical work and first aid tents used at the 4 H Roundup and Armed Services Days. Four First Aid classes awarded 106 Standard First Aid Certificates. Swimming pool manager Perry Rockwell renewed as Instructor. Fund Drive totaled 7566.54 with contributions from several towns. Charles L. Reese led the drive Mrs John Small elected secretary and Mrs B McCall reappointed treasurer.

Scholarships Awarded to Carroll County Graduates

Four University of Illinois scholarships awarded to Carroll County graduates with eight teacher training scholarships for 1954 graduates. Recipients include John Bouseman and Marianne Ivey among others. exams determine university scholars. Training scholarships cover four years without examination for top graduates planning teaching careers.

Queen of the Furrow contest announced for 4-H girl

The Soil Conservation District Board invites eligible county girls to enter the Queen of the Furrow contest. Participants must be single, aged 17 to 22 on September 17, and have lived on a farm for two years. The event is June 92 at Thomson high school at 1 pm with district and state prizes including government bonds and travel funds.

Chadwick community voters approve a new high school building site purchase and a $350,000 bond to finance construction. The election authorized raising the educational fund tax rate and selling part of the grade school grounds for the project.

County Board Holds Routine Meet Tuesday

Carroll county board of supervisors met Tuesday in a brief session approving semi annual officer reports and routine business. Contracts for road projects in Shannon Rock Creek Salem Wysox and Elkhorn Grove townships were awarded to Kutz Bros funded by motor fuel tax. Turner culvert project in Woodland Township received county aid. A combine for county farm use was referred to the county farm committee. liquor license for Indian Head Tavern to Mrs Wieland was discussed but tabled pending eligibility evidence.

White Eagle 4-H Camp Welcomes 146 Youth This Week
