Sudan Grass Gains As Emergency Crop

Sudan grass rapidly replaces millet in many states as an emergency hay and summer pasture crop. Originating from Africa and introduced in 1900, it has grown in value to about 10 million dollars by 1918. It thrives in southern Great Plains, needs water, resists drought, and is used widely by farmers for feed and pasture. Seed production remains unprofitable due to yields and prices, with best seed yields in western Texas and irrigated NM AZ CA regions. To avoid hybridization, seed fields should be kept at least 80 rods from sorghum.
