County Ameri Legion posts gathered Tuesday at Lanark High School for the monthly Carroll county Legion and Auxiliary meeting open to the public. Speaker Rev BLM Johnson Porveson spoke on the program as Lyle Wilcox Sterling spoke on the Educational Program and Rev Joseph Martin discussed The Boy Scouts. The Lanark High School band performed as the Boy Scout group lent support under scoutmaster Rev Martin. The domestic science department served lunch after the program.
Fire destroyed the Frank Hatfield farm home north of the Palisades State Park early Tuesday morning. Hatfield woke his wife and alerted his son for help as Savanna firefighters could not save the structure for lack of water. The house, rebuilt on the site of a prior fire seven years ago, was uninsured with only a few clothing items saved.
George Weidman, a county farmer near Mt. Carroll, suffered a severe accident Friday when his right hand entangled in a power sausage grinder. All four fingers were ground to pieces. He was treated by a local physician and later moved to Sir Francis Hospital in Freeport.
A notice states the SRS office in Savanna will open mornings from 9 to 11 20 a m with Miss Catherine Pollock in charge, supplementing hours announced last week. The venue hours remain 3 29 to 5 p m with Mass Het in charge.

Governor Horner via State Director Robert C. Kingery will acquire a 2 mile long by 300 feet wide stretch of virgin timber along Terrapin Ridge on US 20 between Elizabeth and Galena. A 150 acre tract will be added to park lands after logging ends. The purchase aims to preserve the scenic timber and create a perpetual roadside picnic area with most timber remaining standing.
Attorney F J Stransky of Chicago and Savanna was elected to the board of directors representing northern and eastern Illinois of the Children’s Aid Society at the annual meeting last week in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Sherman in Chicago. Mrs D W Mammond of Savanna attended.
Reported relief appropriation of two million five hundred thousand dollars passes state Senate. Other items include marriage license first of year to Lanark comple om Friday and Savanna announcing plans for President's birthday batt.
Tax figures from the 1935 assessments show Salem township taxes about 3500 higher than the 1934 total of 634. Rock Creek township tax bills jump to 54,748.62 from 17,781.57 in 1934. The 1935 assessed valuations stand at 1,047,910 for Salem and 1,961,280 in 1931 for comparison. The Red Cross roll call reports 689.50 raised in Carroll county this year.

Alt Nichol, 70, of Lanark, was committed to the county jail after a hearing before Police Magistrate J. R. Snively. Nichol was ordered to furnish a peace bond of 1000 dollars for five months or serve the five months in jail. Unable to post bond or pay costs of 12 dollars, Nichol was jailed.
