State snowplows operated almost constantly to keep all highways passable as a strong west wind piled up drifts and blocked side roads north and south of Chadwick. Route 88 was partly blocked north of Chadwick but cleared before dark. Two inches of snow fell Saturday night and Sunday, ice from previous freezing rain melted in sheltered spots but long stretches remained slick, forcing motorists to crawl. Temperatures dropped to about ten degrees above zero Monday night and two to ten below Wednesday morning with little wind. Sunny weather returned Tuesday and Wednesday after weeks of gloom.

Train crashes cattle truck at Fulton crossing
Bob Masteller of Hampton Iowa and D R Doane of Iowa escaped death when a train struck their cattle trailer at a Fulton crossing Sunday night. About 11 head were killed and several injured as wreckage strewn along the tracks. The cab had just cleared the crossing when the engine hit the trailer.

Funeral services were held for Rex Allen Doty 19 of Savanna with burial in Savanna cemetery after a coroner's inquest ruled death by own action. Surviving are his parents five brothers and six sisters. Also noted are deaths of Flora Bettendorf 78 of Savanna and Pertha Kerch 81 of Lanark with brief funeral rites and burials in Davenport and Lanark respectively. In Mt. Carroll on Tuesday evening tire inspection officials and county residents heard Miller, a state OPA representative, outline the new program under gas rationing. The initial inspection deadline was pushed from January 31 to February 28 for B and C book holders and March 31 for A book holders, with later inspections every six months for A holders and every three months for others.
