Chadwick firefighters were called at 10 30 a m Monday to extinguish a blazing truck motor at the John Conod farm about one mile west of Chadwick. Damage was limited to wiring in the motor and the blaze did not spread to the rest of the truck. The driver, Lee Michael, was en route to Algona with milk and stopped to visit relatives when flames burst from under the hood and could not be controlled with a small extinguisher.
Mr and Mrs Herman Daehler hosted a Christmas dinner with Arlene Daehler Leon Daehler and Donovan Daehler families. Robert Traum and daughter of Morrison joined Robert Traum Sr in greetings. Denver visitors Charles and Sheldon Tripp spent weekend with Floyd Tripp and returned home Tuesday. Ray Engelkens hosted a Van Dyke family scramble dinner with Lena Van Dyke Allene Charles Himes Louis Van Dyke Betty Van Dyke Paul Van Dyke Vernon Van Dyke Robert Proprieter Jim McDonnell Glen Engelkens Dale Engelkens and others exchanging gifts.
Harvey J. Hillers of Polo, 41, was killed when his truck left Highway 64 near Savanna, overturned after a 288 foot skid. A coroner verdict cited crushing chest injuries. He was a Ramp Egg Market driver, WW2 veteran, married Katherine Cripe with a daughter Helen Marie. Burial in Dix did Chapel Hill Memorial Park.
Guests entertained in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hans after the church program included Mr. and Mrs. Frank Manning and family, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Hans and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Aude and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Weber and family. Refreshments were served.
Lanark tavern operator Mac’s Tavern owner Edmund Mc Fadden and three Shimer College students were fined for liquor violations in Carroll County. Judge Turnbaugh imposed 50 dollars and costs on Mc Fadden for three counts of selling liquor to minors. Just ice of the Peace Lee Gifford fined Jerome Alfaro 25 dollars, Steve Wilson 18, and John Mc Lean 17 for purchasing liquor while minors after pleading guilty.
Lyle Bickert of San Francisco spent the past week with relatives in Oregon and with his sister Mrs. Ed ward Brown. He left for his home Monday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Frommell Jr and sons of Sterling and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Kaul and sons were guests for Christmas dinner and supper last Monday of Mr. and Mrs. John Doty.
Funeral services for Donald Ditsworth 52 were held at 2 p m at the Frank funeral home Mt Carroll with Rev Cyrus Pollard officiating. Burial in Oak Hill cemetery followed. Ditsworth died of a heart attack December 21 at Moltmann and Smith garage where he worked as a mechanic. He was born January 8 1908 and survived by wife Verle Ginther six daughters two brothers and three sisters.
Carroll County court jailed Carroll William E. Hardy, 56, Galena, for one year at Vandalia State Farm after he pled guilty to passing a bad $35 check at Kinnell's Marine in Savanna. Hardy had been held in the county jail since arrest by Savanna police Saturday.
Secretary of State Charles F. Carpentier reports actions by the Drivers License Division affecting Carroll county residents. Oscar A. Janssen of Shannon loses his license for driving while intoxicated. Terry F. Sturtevant of Savanna has his license suspended for three violations. A probationary permit is issued to Franklin L. Smith of Mill edgeville.
Carroll county residents purchased 77178 in series D and H United States Savings Bonds during November, reported by F. E. Weidman of Mr. Carroll. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Martin and daughters were guests for Christmas at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Martin.
Lanark Holiday tournament opened with Chadwick Silver Streaks edging Pearl City 60 38 and Walnut Blue Raiders narrowly defeating Mt Carroll 66 65. Denny Emnyre led Chadwick with 20 points while Pearl City fouled out four players. Three Lanark men faced obscenity charges, with fines and jail terms following a state case aided by authorities.
Judge and Mrs Leroy H Johnson Red Oak announce engagement of Janet Ann to Charles F Kinney Jr son of Mr and Mrs Charles F Kinney of Mt Carroll. Janet is a senior at Augustana College Rock Island and member of Kappa Epsilon sorority. Kinney is Augustana graduate and Omicron Sigma member now at Mayo Clinic School of Physical Therapy in Rochester Minnesota. A July wedding is planned.
Sunday dinner entertained in Wagner Balk home with Mrs Helen Balk of Morrison, Mr and Mrs Harold Van Kampen and Mrs Bertha Van Kampen of Fulton, Mr and Mrs Howard Johnson and family of Lena, Mr and Mrs Henry Newendyke and sons, and Mr and Mrs Harold Balk and family. Clayton Kaul and son were Friday dinner guests in Mrs Charles Honberger home.
Court records show Gail Lamoreux Jr was convicted of obscene literature and arranged for a 15 day jail term on weekends, though records do not confirm the arrangement. One marriage license was issued to Charles Mika and Eva Melville. Real estate transfers and local committee actions to promote a University of Illinois experiment station in the tri county area are noted.
