Babson Park Mass December 3. William Green AFL president discusses Truman and labor with readers. He predicts limited business gains, possible Taft Hartley changes, and warns of Southern Democrat influence while urging farmers to ride out fluctuations and prepare for 1949.
Mr and Mrs Orval Schreiner and daughter Cynthia spent Saturday with Harve Schreiner and Mrs Olve Schneider who visited Mt Carroll before returning home. Harold Zeerph of Fulton stayed with Arnold Wiersema. Saturday guests at John Doty’s included Robert Queckser Lawrence Doden and Frank Hawkins. William Bloss of Aurora visited Mr and Mrs Queckboernes.
A large two story farmhouse on the F. J. Stranky farm five miles north of Thomson burned Tuesday around 3:30 pm. Mr and Mrs Edward Hebeler and three children escaped with only their clothes as fire destroyed the building and contents. Firefighters from Thomson and Savannah arrived too late to save the structure. wind spared other farm buildings. Insurance coverage was believed inadequate. The cause was not determined and the family is staying with relatives.
Two new county officials assumed duties Monday and a third began a new four year term. Lawrence A. Smith of Savanna was elected state’s attorney, Harvey C. Pauley succeeded by the coroner, and Gordon B. Smith moved from circuit clerk to a full term as coroner. No ceremony marked the oath of office. The new state’s attorney pledged enforcement of gambling and tavern laws and called for cooperation for honest government. Pauley succeeds Dr J B Schreiter, Savanna, who held the coroner post since 1900 and did not seek re election.
The Fair Haven Ladies Aid held its Christmas meeting at Mrs Harold Turnbaughs home with Mrs Chas Sucher assisting. Mrs Carl son and Mrs H Geo Adolph led a program of Christmas poems and a quiz. A gift exchange and refreshments followed. An original poem The Tiny Tree was read. Mr Henry Young Sr and family were Sunday dinner guests at the Bull home.
Lanark Downs Savanna won 51 46 over Savanna Indians after a tight game with a third quarter tie and a late surge by Sanders. Heckman and Parker led with 22 points each for Lanark and Savanna respectively, as Fulton defeated Mt Carroll 55 31 and coaches eyed upcoming Dec 10 and 14 matchups.
Judge Leon A. Zick grants a decree of divorce to Minnie T. Stambaugh Savanna from Carvin C. Stambaugh. Other docket items include property transfers and fictitious assignments for Savanna Mt Carroll Stowell's addition and York area parcels. Witness lists not provided.
Illinois American Legion reports 100 910 members for 1948 49, far ahead of other states led by Indiana at 86 050. Danville Post 210 leads with 1 515 members, Bloomington Post 56 has 1 422, and Commonwealth Edison Post 118 Chicago 1 213.
Mrs Paul Koenigsmark of Rockford stayed with Mr and Mrs Charles Lewis while Mr and Mrs Alvin Larem hosted their guests Stanley and Alden in Clinton Iowa Monday evening. Lloyd Miller and son Don from Sunnyside Washington visited Arthur Deets after attending the International Stock Show. Midshipman Evan Harris on 14 day leave from Pensacola left for Corpus Christi Texas for further training. Claude Cook Jr hosted Sunday guests Mr Ned Dollinger and son and Mr R M Adams of Lanark.
Chadwick’s Silver Streaks defeated Lyndon 68-24 on Friday night. The team led 14-2 after one quarter and 38-10 at halftime, finishing strong as Osen scored 18 and Bickert 14 while Kniskern led Lyndon with 15 points.
Shannon varsity edged Lanark 40-38 in a Carroll County conference game in Lanark Illinois. Lanark won the preliminary 62-35.
Mrs T R Moritz Mrs Emmett Zumdahl and Mrs Fay Hawkins hosted a Tuesday afternoon Junior W M S program at Mrs Wien Miller’s home. Zumdahl Hawkins sang and Moritz presented a color film strip The Shepherds Watch. Frank Cheeseman accompanied and attended. Further visits include Adoph Hartman Engel and Krempel families with local residents sharing weekend gatherings and home moves. Elizabeth VanBuskirk returned to Uitosen Iowa after visiting Van Buskirk home.
Local scores from Aquin to Joliet and Milliken games amid Friday December updates. Chadwick and Lanark teams posted results as Thurday matches preview upcoming schedule including Dec 10 Milledgeville and Dec 14 Mt Carroll as well as tournament dates in February.
The Munson men trailed at halftime but surged in the second half to beat Elizabeth 51 40. Heusinkveld led with 21 points and Wiley added 12 as the Trojans pulled away after a tight game. The curtain raiser ended 39 31.
Obituaries from Savanna area report the deaths of Savanna natives Savanna-Mrs. Lena Katherine Dauphin 80, Carroll County native Jena K Weible, and Savanna resident Mrs Caville Sturevant 75. Funeral services and burials were held in Savanna and nearby towns with survivors including spouses children and grandchildren. Additional notices mention the death of Savanna resident Savanna native Savanna man William Hamilton in Lanark after illness and a railroad worker with ties to Milwaukee.
A list shows game dates from November to February for Chadwick and nearby towns with opponents such as Fulton Savanna Polo Rock Falls Oregon Lanark Morrison and Elizabeth plus a holiday tournament. Sterling Township rallied in the second half to defeat Morrison 52 50 in a nonconference game after a 25 18 halftime deficit. Township won the opener 42 21. McCormick of Township and M Voss of Morrison tied for scoring honors with 19 points each.
Savanna high School routed Mt Carroll high School 49-28 as Kyle Welch led with 11 points while Gifford topped scorers with 12. The night also saw Savanna win the preliminary lightweight contest 21-8.
Chadwick defeated Hanover 63 to 47 as Queckboerner and Olson led Chadwick with 14 points each. Hanover reserve scoring trimmed the gap late, with Schatz and others contributing, and Chadwick won the opener 21 to 6 and 18 points in the final period.
In a Hoosier era report from Wisconsin notes the jury acquits Colby in a mass murder trial tied to a line of Holstein cattle production. The cattle herd from Mt Carroll Illinois is profiled under Herd Improvement rules supervised by the University of Illinois with the Holstein Friesian Association. The top producer Zer na Porch Cornucopia Burke yields 186 pounds of butterfat and 201 pounds of milk in a year across two daily milkings at age 66 years.
Mr and Mrs J Y Stickell hosted the Rock club for a scramble supper Friday night. Guests included Mr and Mrs Ed Schreiner Mr and Mrs Geo Bast Mr and Mrs Fred Senhrei ner Mr and Mrs Ed Mest and Mr and Mrs Rey Queckboerner.
A circuit court jury acquitted Colby Loechel Chadwick of the charges stemming from a fatal crash south of Igor when his car left the highway and struck Mr. and Mrs. Wartied. The jury reached its verdict after about seven hours of deliberation and read it aloud before Circuit Judge Lee I. Zick. Loechel testified he had only two bottled beers and one whiskey at the time. He was defended by Attorney L. J. Knight of Rockford.
Miss Hazel Fogel bride elect of Ned Clanncher of Chadwick was the guest of honor at a Saturday afternoon shower hosted by Mrs. Dick Thiel with co hosts Mrs. E J Adolph and Mrs. Donald Anderson. Finochle prizes went to Miss Fogel and to Mrs. John Cunningham and Mrs. Weyne Alshouse. A dessert luncheon at quarter tables featured pastel mums and green yellow umbrellas. Fogel received a set of end table lamps as a gift.
Milledgeville varsity defeats Lyndon 77 to 11 after an 18-0 first quarter burst. Woodin leads Milledgeville with 20 points while Lyndon’s Crumbly tops with 4. Preliminary Milledgeville win 35-20.
Thomson coached by Munson won 63 50 against Milledgeville in a Carroll Conference game. The Trojans led 28 26 at half and pulled away 52 32 after three quarters. KR Heusinkveld scored points while Elliott added 16 for Milledgeville with Farwell and Oncken leading on the losing side.
A day meeting for the first anniversary of Milhoon E A B Church east of Milledgeville was held Sunday. Mrs Sanford of Gales iv led a mission at that place and Rev Sanford, a former pastor, participated. Attendees included Chadwick residents and local families.
