Mr and Mrs Orval Schreiner and daughter Cynthia spent Saturday with Harve Schreiner and Mrs Olve Schneider who visited Mt Carroll before returning home. Harold Zeerph of Fulton stayed with Arnold Wiersema. Saturday guests at John Doty’s included Robert Queckser Lawrence Doden and Frank Hawkins. William Bloss of Aurora visited Mr and Mrs Queckboernes.

Farmhouse Razed by Fire North of Thomson

A large two story farmhouse on the F. J. Stranky farm five miles north of Thomson burned Tuesday around 3:30 pm. Mr and Mrs Edward Hebeler and three children escaped with only their clothes as fire destroyed the building and contents. Firefighters from Thomson and Savannah arrived too late to save the structure. wind spared other farm buildings. Insurance coverage was believed inadequate. The cause was not determined and the family is staying with relatives.

New County Officials Take Over in Mt Carroll

Two new county officials assumed duties Monday and a third began a new four year term. Lawrence A. Smith of Savanna was elected state’s attorney, Harvey C. Pauley succeeded by the coroner, and Gordon B. Smith moved from circuit clerk to a full term as coroner. No ceremony marked the oath of office. The new state’s attorney pledged enforcement of gambling and tavern laws and called for cooperation for honest government. Pauley succeeds Dr J B Schreiter, Savanna, who held the coroner post since 1900 and did not seek re election.

Christmassy Meeting of Fair Haven Ladies Aid Society

The Fair Haven Ladies Aid held its Christmas meeting at Mrs Harold Turnbaughs home with Mrs Chas Sucher assisting. Mrs Carl son and Mrs H Geo Adolph led a program of Christmas poems and a quiz. A gift exchange and refreshments followed. An original poem The Tiny Tree was read. Mr Henry Young Sr and family were Sunday dinner guests at the Bull home.

Lanark Downs Savanna won 51 46 over Savanna Indians after a tight game with a third quarter tie and a late surge by Sanders. Heckman and Parker led with 22 points each for Lanark and Savanna respectively, as Fulton defeated Mt Carroll 55 31 and coaches eyed upcoming Dec 10 and 14 matchups.

Illinois American Legion reports 100 910 members for 1948 49, far ahead of other states led by Indiana at 86 050. Danville Post 210 leads with 1 515 members, Bloomington Post 56 has 1 422, and Commonwealth Edison Post 118 Chicago 1 213.

Verdict Returned After Seven Hours of Deliberation

A circuit court jury acquitted Colby Loechel Chadwick of the charges stemming from a fatal crash south of Igor when his car left the highway and struck Mr. and Mrs. Wartied. The jury reached its verdict after about seven hours of deliberation and read it aloud before Circuit Judge Lee I. Zick. Loechel testified he had only two bottled beers and one whiskey at the time. He was defended by Attorney L. J. Knight of Rockford.
