Thomson’s Last Civil War Soldier Is Called Home

W. D. M. Cone, Thomson’s last remaining Civil War veteran and a longtime York township resident, died Monday of heart failure at 86. Born May 20, 1846, in Unionville Whiteside County, he served in Company B 140th Infantry, aided local funerals for decades, and helped found Thomson’s hardware and water-supply trades. Funeral Thursday at Dunshee Cemetery.

Schedule for All Y.C.H.S. Cage Dates Announced

The 1926 27 YCH 8 basketball season schedule lists Nov 24 Mt Carroll at Thomson and Dec 28 29 Port Byron Tournament at Port Byron among other games. Local notes mention Mr Brown of Savanna visiting, a funeral, and community events including a Methodist Ladies Aid dinner.

Ladies' Session Bazaar Dinner and Institute Notes

A heavy sleet storm reduced attendance at the Farmer's Institute events at the Methodist Church on Tuesday. The ME Ladies held a chicken dinner and bazaar in the church basement, with gifts for Christmas. Mrs Louis Schick chaired the Ladies Division as grade and YCHS choirs performed. Mrs W J Fulton spoke on the three Ts of housekeeping, stressing tact thrift and thought for modern homemaking and family finances. The program closed with musical numbers by Sylvia Griswold and Thelma Schick.

Farmer's Institute in Thomson Draws Strong School Music Support

Despite weather and hog disease threats the Farmer's Institute in Thomson succeeded with full participation. Speakers included Mrs W J Fulton, Mr A C Everingham, and County Agt Roske. Highlights featured cooperative marketing and limestone use, with moving pictures by Roske and songs by local schools.

Men’s quartet performs at Farmer's Institute event

Evening Session reports Fred Smith as the Institute’s official writer as the male quartet comprises Ernest Smith Charlie Wilt Rush Carroll and Alva Smith on piano. They pleased the audience with encores and announced programs including Juanita in Christmas, an Irish medley, and When Jack Proposed. The school event, on December 24 at 7 pm, invites public attendance guided by Louisa M Daehler.

A Full House to Be Staged by Savanna Dramatic Club

Savanna Dramatic Club presents the comedy A Full House on Tuesday night December 14 at a New York City drawing room setting. Cast includes Parks an English butler Wayne Smith Susie from Stour City maid and others with a show girl Vera Vernon. The production is directed by Marie Fuller.

Sandridge Man Arrested on Serious Charge in Savanna Court

William Johnson 49, a Sandridge area farmer, was arrested on a rape charge sworn by his daughter Nora after a sequence of alleged assaults over two years. He pleaded not guilty, posted no bond on the second charge, and remained in Mt Carroll jail under $5000 bonds as authorities pursue the case ahead of the next court term. Nora and another daughter reported feared mistreatment, with the family moving from Thomson area to Hoopston and then near Penia.
