Babson argues salaries have lagged behind rising living costs, urging business to raise pay and incentives for white collar executives. He warns that without improving compensation and training, the best minds will leave office work for better returns behind machines.
Carroll County retail trade totaled 3 588 922 dollars in the first quarter of 1948 up 19.7 percent from 1947 and 198.9 percent from 1941. Adjusted for price increases the gain was 10.1 percent over 1947 and 61.2 percent over 1941. 1947 sales reached 14 516.85 dollars, up 27.7 percent from 1946 and 115.4 percent from 1941. after price adjustment the changes were 9.9 percent and 28.1 percent respectively.
Walter A. Knox a 50 year old Chicago salesman was found dead in Center Hill cemetery last Thursday afternoon in an apparent selfinflicted gunshot. A coroner's jury ruled death by his own action noting six notes five found near the body and in the car. Knox left a farewell message and died from a bullet wound to the chest. He leaves a second wife Arlene Lotzbaugh and two brothers with a sister and a stepdaughter among others.
Don Pals, field representative for the Rockford Social Security office, will visit Carroll County on Thursday Sept 2. He will be at Carroll post office from 10 to 11 am and Savannah post office from 1 to 2:30 pm. County residents aged 65 or over with work in covered jobs should inquire about rights and benefits under the Social Security Act.
Dennis Janssen, 7, son of Mr and Mrs S Jana cen of Salem township, moved to the polio convalescent ward at Deaconess hospital Freeport and is reported to be improving. Six Mt Carroll polio patients were sent to Freeport. one discharged, three in convalescent ward, two still at St Francis for treatment. Mr and Mrs Lloyd Ferris and son returned from Toledo Ohio.
Future Farmers Chadwick and Thomson exhibit projects at the Stephenson county junior fair Vocational Fair at Taylor's Park Freeport on Thursday and Friday August 26 and 27. Chadwick lists multiple Hereford, Angus, Holstein, Jersey, Leghorn and New Hampshire Red entries. Thomson lists Guernsey Brown Swiss Duroc Jersey cows, Hereford steers, shorthorn heifers, horns and a garden section.
Illinois Rural Youth members will join a state conservation school September 23 to 25 at Lake Villa on Fox Lake, 50 miles northwest of Chicago. Ellsworth D. Lyons announces instructors from federal and state agencies will lead sessions on soil conservation and land use.
About 40 members of Black Oak Grange gathered Thursday evening at Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bakers for a lawn party. Mrs. John Halfman Sr, Mrs. Harold Stoner, and Mrs. Charles Demeier led the program. music came from William Hans and Frank Manning Jr. Refreshments were provided by Mrs. John Harman Jr. and Mrs. Demeier. The Orange held its annual piète at Old Mill Park. Next Grange meeting is Thursday evening, Sept. 2.
Savanna hosts the marriage of Savanna resident Miss Jeanette M. Truninger to Harold L. Seidenburg of Mt. Carroll at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Russell Shaw officiating. Reception in church parlors follows. Earlier Mt Carroll couple Miss Lois Faye Dixon and Herbert Richter wed at Mt Carroll Lutheran Church with reception at the Geu home.
Carroll County selects a five member peace-time draft board chaired by Ward Sisler with John Sullivan as secretary. Thomas Diffenderfer Ernest Frey and Joseph Loeser join, all joining from Mt. Carroll and Savanna. Board headquarters to be set. Mt. Carroll veterans office to serve temporarily.
The county clerk issued licenses for Harold N Siedenburg and Jeanette M Truninger, Alfred F Workman and Evelyn Houzenga, August C Kortemeier and Emma Kuhlemeyer, John Sjoberg and Ruth Staas, Herbert Richter and Lois Dixon, among others. Separately, James Canavan of Savanna was jailed after failing to post 5000 bond on a statutory charge, following a hearing in Savanna police court attended by Harriet Snavely and Harvey Woessner.
Roberta Jean Hook and Merton P Loomis wed in a Sunday ceremony at First Baptist Church Mt Carroll with Dr William Lyons officiating. The couple plans home in Savanna Illinois after a wedding trip through Wisconsin Minnesota and North Dakota.

Several minor highway accidents in the past week were reported with no injuries. Savanna driver Martin Ginie avoided a collision near Lanark by leaving the road and striking a concrete culvert, damaging the truck front. Other crashes involved Mrs. Sylvester McWorthy and L. C. Smith in Savanna, and Weley Rinehart and Saima Wetcott on Route 80 north of Savanna with vehicle damage but no injuries.
Carroll County Farmers Bureau team dominates festival play in Champaign Illinois winning district title and advancing to state honors. Roster includes Merle Stutevant Glen Wiel Robert Dyson David Rahn and others as they defeated Stephenson and Day County to reach the finals.
Joseph S Boothby 85 died at home in Chetnut Park. Funeral conducted Monday at Law Ju Veaul hone in Savanna with Rev Foster Whitne officiating. Burial in Savanna cemetery. Survived by widow Minn Douglas, son A L Boothby, one grand daughter and one great grand daughter, three brothers and a sister.
Chicago Carroll County receipts show $22 091 in allocations for a Wilneis state roadway in 1948 s first six months. The report notes a $1 012 rise from 1947 as rising motor fuel consumption boosted gas tax revenue. Mr and Mrs Robert Balk were dinner guests Sunday of Mr Helen Balk.
Illinois Governor Dwight Green issues a proclamation calling all male residents ages 18 through 25 to register for the Selective Service on August 30 1948. The notice details deferments for husbands fathers essential workers and those in the armed forces with emphasis on non discrimination race creed or color. Local registration sites include Chadwick Thomson Lanark Mt. Carroll and remarks invite volunteers to assist draft boards.

Veterans of World War II may renew their National Service Life Insurance for five more years at current renewal rates. First policies issued in October 1940 would expire next October without renewal or conversion. A new law allows renewal of term policies for five years, and reinstatement is possible after a lapse if a veteran passes a physical exam. Service Officer Harold C. Steen of Carroll County offers aid at his Mt. Carroll office to veterans with GI insurance questions.
Sunday guests in Chadwick included Mr. and Mrs. Louis Meppen of Dixon and Mr. and Mrs. George Dambman with Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hartman. They were entertained at the home of Mrs. Eigabeth Senneff and later at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Dambman for supper.
