Civilian workers at the Savanna ordnance depot report official notices posted Tuesday say night work will end after August 9 and only daytime shifts will operate. A heavy personnel reduction is expected, rumors suggesting up to a 50 percent cut. One reduction occurred in July while some plants closed, but the 24 hour three-shift schedule continued.

Members of the county war meat committee reviewed slaughter permits issued in Carroll County at a Tuesday session in Mt. Carroll. They recommended extending all but one permit, which was canceled due to an unlocated applicant. Recommendations go to the area supervisor for approval, with a published list to follow upon clearance. Farmers and custom slaughterers must obtain committee permits to continue business, even if they slaughter mainly in winter. Harold Fredericks of Polo and Melvin Pilgrim of Milledgeville were arrested on forgery charges in Sterling last Thursday after a preliminary hearing.
