State Police report July motor vehicle arrests and fines
State Highway Police Chief Walter Williams said in a Saturday report that 2,447 people were arrested for motor vehicle law violations last month and 60 for other offenses. Fines and costs totaled 18,628 with stop sign violations most common at 538 offenses. Truckers paid 84,866 in fines for overweight vehicles and 1,681 in penalties from 21 motorists without licenses.

Since January 1 1938 Carroll County TB drive under county nurse Nell Stewart tested 884 residents, with 825 people tested and 175 positive. Byers Herd Tops Carroll County Dairy Record for July
Seven grade Holsteins owned by Harry Byers of Woodland town ship led the Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement association with the top production in July. The Byers herd averaged 59.5 pounds of milk and 3 6.3 pounds of butterfat, while Stransdale No 1 recorded the high individual cow at 1 9 1 3 pounds of milk and 63.3 pounds of butterfat. Fifty cows in the associations herds averaged over 40 pounds of butterfat each.

Bids for 22 igloo type smokeless powder magazines at Savanna Ordnance Depot were opened Monday. An earlier notice announced bids for 70 more magazines to be opened August 11. Construction quartermaster Lieut. Joseph F. Gill oversees the process. The low bid came from Permanent Construction Co. of Chicago at 249000 dollars. the highest bid reached 374000 dollars. Carroll Man Sentenced to Six Months at Vandalia
John Walter Edmonds 28 of Mt. Carroll was given six months on the state penal farm at Vandalia by Judge Leon Wick in Mt. Carroll circuit court. Indicted by the grand jury after being arrested for stealing two hogs from a load bound for Chicago, he allegedly sold them under the Edwards name and cashed a $35 check after pleading guilty.

Fish Rescue Along Mississippi River Aids Thousands Of Fish
Wardens Hand and Rigney lead a crew rescuing tens of thousands of fish stranded in lowland pools along the Mississippi. Carp bullheads sunfish crappies bass pike pickerel are gathered, placed in tanks, then released into the Big Slough to return to the river. Moving pictures of the operation are planned to show public effort.

Cattle From Four Counties Lead Chicago Trade in July Sales
Cattle from McLean Kane Carroll Winnebago and other counties topped Chicago Stock Yards auctions in July with multiple consignors achieving top prices. Meers and Youle each sold 20 head with averages around 12.25 to 12.76 per cwt. Kane and Winnebago counties also posted record marks, while hogs at Chicago reached a yearly high of 10.25 per cwt.
