Rural Youth Plan Skating Party and Dance in Mt Carroll

The Carroll County Rural Youth group met April 12 with 28 members, now 45 active, planning a May 8 Spring Dance at Farm Bureau Hall Mt Carroll with Law's Orchestra. They announced a skating party April 27 at Savanna Roller Rink and outlined committees for decorations, tickets, cleanup, and food and recreation. Sheriff Harry Miller spoke on criminal capture and crime prevention, highlighting that crime does not pay.

4-H And FFA Dairy Judging Contest Set For April 24

A 4-H and FFA dairy judging contest will be held Saturday April 24 at 8 00 am starting at the Derver Bros farm and moving to the Ed Keim and Leroy Foltz farms. Holsteins Brown Swiss and Guernsey animals will be judged. Winners may enter the state dairy judging contest at Urbana Illinois in late August on the University of Illinois campus. Tell Mrs Don Smith and infant son were dismissed Monday afternoon from Savanna hospital and returned home.

Rains Bring Encouragement to Area Farmers

Nice rain last week cheered farmers and more showers Monday night into Tuesday brought smiles. Light showers cooled to a heavy thunderstorm after 1 PM with additional storms later. Hail reported in Thomson area during the first afternoon storm and runoff increased after the heavier rains.

Mississippi River flow remains slightly below normal

River flows are near below normal for the season with recent small increases. Heavy rains in the Chippewa valley boosted next week’s inflows from that region. Upstream traffic rose with twelve towboats and 54 barges moving, carrying 64 350 tons of petroleum products and coal. downstream traffic totaled 26 300 tons of grain and other goods.

Merchant jailed for failure to pay child support contempt

In Carroll county circuit court Judge Leon A. Zick ordered Allen Merchant to serve 60 days in county jail for contempt after he admitted he would not continue support payments. He faced more than 800 dollars in arrears tied to an earlier divorce.

Open House May 9 At Dixon State School

During National Mental Health Week from May 2 to 9 the Dixon State School will hold an Open House on Sunday May 9 from 1 to 4 30 p m DST. Exhibits in Murray Hall tours of the institution and certificates for outstanding employees will be presented. The May Fete is at 3 p m on the same day at the May Field in front of the administration building with a program by patients.

Dr Brumbaugh to resign as Shimer head

Dr Aaron J Brumbaugh president of Shimer College will resign at end of current school year. He and his wife plan to move from Mount Carroll to Tallahassee Florida and devote full time to a survey of colleges for the Southern Regional Education Board.

Honor Attorney For Service In Savings Bond Sales

Chas E. Stuart of Mt. Carroll received a Treasury Department commendation for ten years as Chairman of the Carroll County Savings Bond Division. He earned a gold pin as one of about twenty five state chairmen to be honored. His leadership helped Carroll County rank high in bond sales during World War II and after.

Record Size Bass Caught at Spring Lake

Bill Eader, Savanna real estate agent, reports catching a record size bass over the weekend in Spring Lake south of Savanna. The bass weighed 6 lbs 9 oz and measured 21 inches, entered in the Illinois fishing contest, frozen and on display at the Savanna news stand. Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Oliver Etnyre included Mr and Mrs Harold Etnyre and daughter Vicki of Clinton Iowa and Mr and Mrs Wilbur Linker and son Randy.

Milledgeville hosts Carroll County athletic banquet show

The Carroll County athletic banquet will be held next Wednesday in Milledgeville. The Gymikana Show from Western Illinois State Teachers College with 34 students will perform a two hour show starting at 7 45 p m in the new gym. Admission is 35 cents for students and 60 cents for adults. Tickets are available at the school.

Board of Trustees Adds Territory to Grade District 85

Carroll county board of school trustees granted a petition to detach a portion of Consolidated District 77 and annex it to Chadwick Grade School District 85. The unanimous vote transfers land in Fair Haven township into the Chadwick high school district.

GM Motorama Opens in Chicago at International Amphitheatre

The GM Motorama 1954 runs in Chicago through May 2 at 42nd and Halsted with admission free. Opening April 24 the event features a Broadway stage and fashion show, the Firebird turbine car, 11 dream cars, Frigidaire Kitchen of Tomorrow, 125+ exhibits, a production line mockup, and an aircraft engine concept. Supervisors Choose Bloyer For Third Term As Chairman

Milledgeville residents vote to adopt daylight saving time for the summer via a special election. C. G. Hanna reports 234 in favor 139 against with four spoiled ballots among 377 voters. Clocks advance at 12:01 a.m. Sunday April 25 and revert last Sunday in September.

Carroll county supervisors reelect Bleyer as chair

At the annual Carroll county board meeting Otho M. Bleyer of Lanark was unanimously re elected to a third consecutive term as chairman. The session released standing committee assignments across finance official salaries court sheriff and more. The board appointed grand jurors for the June circuit term and issued marriage licenses for two couples. A 4 H contour plowing contest was announced for April 27 at the John Linker farm with Prof. Ben Muirhead as chief judge.
