Donner Party Tragedy at Donner Lake and Trail Hardships
A historical note recounts the overland crossing to California led by George and Jacob Donner and James Reed in 1846. The journey grew brutal from Independence, Missouri, with 518 wagons, warlike Indians, and ever harsher conditions as the group reached Donner Lake. Starvation forced cannibalism and improvised food as deaths mounted before two men finally secured aid after 42 lives were lost.
