Babson surveys the first quarter of 1942 noting inflationary pressures, rising wholesale prices, and rationing prospects. He cites stock market gains, a shift toward peace and cheap stocks, and warns against overvalued issues while anticipating postwar industrial and scientific advances. He covers manufacturing, retail trade, and government policy.
The APO announced last week that prize winning animals from 4 H clubs and Future Farmers of America exhibitions are exempt from livestock price ceilings. The ruling focuses on wholesale prices as prize animals are commonly auctioned at higher rates after shows.
Illinois newspapermen and radio representatives tour four large military establishments in Illinois arranged by the Sixth Service Command Public Relations. The group visits Camp Grant Chicago Quartermaster Depot Rock Island Arsenal and Savanna ordnance depot with demonstrations of fire fighting reclamation of brass cartridge shells loading of bombs and munitions storage in igloos.
One hundred pheasants were released last Thursday in Carroll County by employees of the state department of conservation.
The Holland and Pratt herd of 15 grade Holstein and Guernsey cows topped Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement Association in March with 44.2 pounds butterfat and 979 pounds milk. Wallace Williams 14 grade Holsteins and the Blair 17 grade Guernseys followed, while the Derver and Carroll and French herds also posted strong totals. The association average was 52.6 pounds butterfat and 819 pounds milk with 869 cows at rest from 22 herds. 39 cows were dry. Betty Lou Pearl registered Brown Swiss led with 79.6 pounds butterfat and 1305 pounds milk. Sixty percent of cows produced 40 or more pounds butterfat in March.
Preston Prairie Alvin Julius of Shannon was a visitor in this community last week. Jake Striker helps at the Howard Petty farm. Mrs. Turnbaugh visited James Turnbaugh's home last Wednesday. Mrs. Ben Williamson has been released from Savanna hospital and returned home. Edna Ditsworth visits her sister Florence in Solon Iowa. Wallace Williams and mother visited in Freeport last Wednesday. Harry Engelking of Rock Creek visited here last week. Ward Gillespie shredded corn Friday. Dr. Derrer called Friday at the Epa Hook home. Mr. Kampmeier of Dakota visited his daughter Mrs. Hook. Ray Graves spent Sunday in the S. F. Graves home. Malchon Pettingill visited Cedar Rapids IA recently. Mrs. Preston Downing visited Chadwick recently.
Porter Weed 75 died Friday at his son Lloyd Weeds home in Lanark after a paralytic stroke last Thursday night. Funeral 2:30 p m Monday in Lanark with Rev E D Burnworth officiating burial in Lanark cemetery. Survived by son three grandchildren Shirley Bobby and Billy Weed and one nephew Robert Truman all of Lanark. Wife died about 20 years ago. He was a mechanic and First Brethren church member.
The navy department appeals to the public for all serviceable firearms and ammo not in use. Any revolver pistol rifle or shotgun 22 caliber or larger is welcome. Sheriff Eber Shepherd will receive contributions in Carroll County and issue navy acknowledgement receipts.
Illinois local boards were told May 1, 1945 is the deadline for completing classifications of childless married men in Class IIIA or IIIB. Col. Paul G. Armstrong says boards must use stricter standards and reclassify qualifying men to 1-A for immediate induction.
The United States plans a 30 day campaign starting next Monday April 12 to raise at least 19 billion dollars for war costs. Thousands of volunteers will solicit citizens while newspapers run ads from the war finance committee to promote United States War Bonds and related securities.
Luman W. Preston was granted a divorce from Elda M. Preston in circuit court at Mt. Carroll last Thursday. Both residents are from Savanna. Judge George C. Dixon presided.

McDermott and Betty Fender. Laverne Baylor is granted a divorce from George Baylor. Circuit court in Mt Carroll sets April 16 for next term. Property transfers include warranty and quitclaim deeds among Savanna, Milledgeville, Mt Carroll, and surrounding areas involving multiple owners and institutions.
March produced no highway deaths in Carroll County, keeping the year’s toll at one. Whiteside, Jo Daviess and Ogle counties each recorded one fatality, while Lee county had two. Through April 1 the tally shows Whiteside 3, Ogle 2, Lee 2, Carroll 1, Jo Daviess 1, Stephenson none.

Herman Daebler, chairman of the Carroll county farm machinery rationing board, announced Tuesday that permits for fencing material purchases are no longer required. Farmers may buy fencing if they can locate materials with a dealer.
Annual convention of the 13th district of the American Legion will be held Sunday June 6 in Mt Carroll. The announcement came at a county Legion council meeting in Milledgeville and was made by district commander J E Griswold of Freeport.

Miss Irma Merchant daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Merchant Lanark and Allen R Zier son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Zier Lanark were married Friday evening in the parsonage of the First Baptist church Mt Carroll. The ring ceremony was read by Rev R H Leitner and the couple were unattended. The bride a 1942 Lanark High School graduate has worked as a county war price and rationing board clerk since last spring. The groom a 1934 Lanark High School graduate is a mechanic in his father’s garage in Lanark. They will reside in Lanark.
More than 60 acres of pasture and stubble west of Chadwick burned Sunday afternoon. Two straw stacks were destroyed while the blaze threatened woodlands on one farm before crews of 35 to 40 men contained it after nearly two hours. Wind driven by a north breeze spread sparks from a Burlington train across dry grass along the Eisseler Higbee and Zugebhwerdt properties and along the railroad right of way.
Carroll county buyers led the Tuesday sale with Clyde Broadwater of Lanark selling 1100 pound steers for 16.35 per cwt while Albert Queckboerner near Lanark moved 1010 pound yearlings at 16.50 per cwt. Cattle prices jumped to 17.75 per cwt the top for March in 24 years, a peak not seen since November 1987. Paul Daehler of Lanark previously sold 1050 pound steers for 16.50 per cwt.
The state auditor’s office announces March old age assistance totaled 10 519 dollars for 399 recipients in Carroll county and 25 831 dollars for 916 recipients in Whiteside county. Aid to dependent children warrants issued last month amounted to 1 137 dollars in Carroll county benefiting 79 children and 3 023 dollars in Whiteside benefiting 211 children.

Tuesday voting largely preserved incumbents across Wysox Mt Carrell and five other townships with few upsets. Savanna saw the lone upset as Albert Elliott defeated John Leu 686 to 451 for highway commissioner. Several races were close in Fair Haven Freedom with incumbents prevailing and multiple townships reporting no opposition.
Seventeen year old seniors and graduates may take preliminary Navy Air Force pilot tests when the Naval Aviation Board visits Sterling April 7 8 and Rock Island April 9 10 12. The board will conduct eye teeth and mental tests at 9 AM to 4 PM. Eligible youths need a principal or college representative recommendation and must rank in the top half or two thirds of their class. Successful prelim candidates go to the Navy for final tests at the Navy’s expense. Details available from principals or college heads.
The AAA office announces continued feed wheat availability for Carroll County farmers. Congress allocates 100 million extra bushels to be sold to farmers for livestock feed. Price to Carroll County farmers or dealers in carload lots is $1.03 fob any station in Carroll County during April.
