Editorial lauds Rev. Ralph M. Harper for twenty three years as rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Winthrop. It celebrates his spiritual guidance and humanitarian work shaping community life, and wishes him many more years of service to the town.
A heated exchange among appropriations committee members shows debt figures ranging from thirty six to forty billion dollars. Experts warn that even optimistic estimates for 1938 require debt retirement beyond expected revenues. The New York Times notes expenditures are so high that boom years do not fund past deficits.
John J. McElligott urges calm and practiced routines to escape fires. Two thirds of deaths happen in dwellings and many victims are trapped on upper floors due to heat signals and panic. Check door panels for heat, use windows or roofs if possible, keep doors closed, and practice regular fire drills with families.
The Mystic Valley League kicks off Saturday with Woburn High visiting Miller Field after an 18-0 win over Stoneham. Coach Jim Brennen, ex Fordham star, introduces Notre Dame style play and expects a strong season with Capt Hoff at fullback and ends O'Donnell and Gorman standing out early. Last year Winthrop beat Wolburn 13-0. Probable lineups to follow.
The Garden Club of the Winthrop Woman's Club meets at Mrs. Robert W. Maklin's home 37 Prospect Street on Monday October 4 1937. Mrs. John Brown will read a paper on Bulbs and Mrs. Edwin M. Howard will judge an Evergreens contest. Caroline M Kirby.
On Sunday October 3 Rev Ralph M Harper will complete 23 years as rector of St John’s Episcopal Church and begin his 24th. prayers of thanksgiving will be read at the 8:00 am and 10:45 am services. He recalls grateful cooperation from parishioners and the community and a remark about walking Winthrop streets.
A new High School gym teacher Mr Wallace administers a Physical Fitness Test to boys in his classes. The test measures lung and back strength grip and leg arm shoulder and abdominal strength in pounds to compare boys of similar size and age. Below average results trigger remedial work to reach normal levels.
Lawrence J. Connery, Democrat, won the special congressional election 40 456 to 27 205 over Republican Edward D. Sirois. Connery carried Winthrop by only 307 votes, a surprising result in a nominally Republican town. Analysts see this as a sign of weakened GOP strength or shifting party loyalty.
William A. Antoni of the W. T. Grant Store at Winthrop Centre said the 31st anniversary sale will begin Friday October 1 with special anniversary values in all departments. Housewives are invited to visit the Winthrop store to inspect merchandise and take advantage of exceptional savings.
Winthrop officials propose connecting the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn line with the Boston Elevated Railway to create rapid transit via a shared roadbed. The Executive Committee urges the Recess Commission to consider selling to the Boston Elevated or the Metropolitan Transit Commission and building a tunnel to Maverick Square, enabling fast airport access and downtown transit.
Harry H Hills of Winthrop retired on Tuesday September 28 after 37 years with town service. He began in the Street Department in 1900 and moved through Gypsy Moth and Tree Warden roles before becoming Gypsy Moth Superintendent in 1920. The Board of Selectmen will appoint his successor.
The Winthrop Evening School opens Thursday evening October 14 1937 at 7 30 in the Winthrop Senior High School building on Pauline Street Winthrop Centre. Programs include High School Department typewriting stenography bookkeeping and Americanization classes for adults in English and arithmetic. The Rev. William S. Key Unitarian minister and Hale associate died at his Winthrop home after 42 years in town. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Bennison Funeral Home with Winthrop Lodge A F and A M officiating. Interment followed in Winthrop Cemetery. He was 80 and survived by three daughters Rosetta Theresa and Mrs. Charles Estabrook and four sons William Ernest Reginald and John. He retired 15 years ago. Born in England he served Wolaston and then Winthrop Unitarian churches.
