Terrile was chosen commander of Winthrop Post No. 146 American Legion at the post officers election held Monday evening in the Dugout. New officers include Thomas Fulham senior vice commander Arnold Tucker tis finance officer Theodore Naedele adjutant George Pierce chaplain Charles Gunderson sergeant at arms and Ross Batchelder George W Downe Francis J Rogers Fred H Clark and Dr Arthur Cassidy on the executive committee. An October installation is planned and a committee will announce details soon.
Funeral services for Ellen C. Abely wife of William F Abely longtime member of the Advisory Committee 274 Winthrop Street were held Thursday morning at 10 in the Church of St John the Evangelist with a requiem high Mass celebrated by Rev Norbert H McInnis with Rev James I Carroll as deacon.
One of the largest gatherings of Knights of Columbus members will gather at St. John's Hall Lincoln Street on Wednesday evening October 3 to witness the installation of officers of Winthrop Council No. 162. Richard D. Cox is installed as Grand Knight and is noted as a popular clerk in the government.
Reverend William J Day will retire as pastor this Sunday at First Baptist Church with a farewell sermon. Mrs Day will move to New York on October 2. The Boston Baptist East Association passed a resolution honoring his 32 years as a pastor in the association.
Winthrop High School begins the 1934 football season at Ingleside Park this Saturday at 2 30 PM against Brookline. Coach Bob Per, with assistants Hol Snow and Pete Jordan, leads a squad returning most veterans and several promising players. The first team includes Farrell and Farmer centers McGinn Gillespie quarterback Rodes McGillicuddy halfbacks Chardon Haley fullbacks Smith Recupero Macken Kirby ends Nichols Gould ONeill and McNeil tackles Curtis Gaudet Black guards.
Dr Winfred Overholser, State Commissioner of Mental Diseases, will be the speaker at the Winthrop Historical and Improvement Association fall meeting and supper on Tuesday October 2 at 6 30 pm at the Barn. The program features prominent speakers for the 1934-1935 season with an educational, wide-ranging lineup. The House Committee will serve a home cooked supper before the meeting and reservations can be made by calling Ocean 1193 or Ocean 2410-R.
Robbers drilled and robbed a back stage safe at the Winthrop Theatre on Putnam Street, stealing about 25 dollars in bills and change. Police believe the bandits stayed in the building and removed the safe to the center of the theater, questioning neighbors for clues.
Stanley Sibley, former Winthrop High School football manager, is listed among students enrolled at Dartmouth College.
Whorf, renowned artist designer and pageant director, father of watercolorist John Whorf, died Saturday after a long illness at his Winthrop home. He was in his 60s. His son Richard Whorf, a noted actor, continued the family stage tradition by performing at the Plymouth Theatre Saturday night.
Retired officer Daniel J Buckley of 38 Read Street, after 32 years on the local force, was called to the station for a farewell gathering. Chief Howard Tewksbury, Lieut James H Douglass, and all members attended as Buckley was honored with words and a token gift amid a traditional old fashioned clam chowder send-off.
