The town meeting slated for last Wednesday was not held due to insufficient attendance. Moderator Joseph Davison opened briefly before a quorum issue was confirmed with 85 members present, short of the 51 percent needed. Alfred Tewkabury moved to adjourn, with reconvening set for October 6.
Estelle M Harrie and Thomas M Davie wed at 115 Hemenway Street Boston with Rev Ralph M Harper of St Johns Episcopal Church officiating. Mrs Davie has visited Winthrop. Miss Muriel Ripley of Tacoma is guest of Mrs Richmond G Stoehr and will enter Dr Sargents school for training after earning a diploma for 100 percent athletic excellence in Tacoma.
The Winthrop Review prints Division 25 names of men listed by the War Department as slackers. The official order from headquarters of the first army area classifies these men as deserters under local draft jurisdiction. Civil officers may claim reimbursement for arrest expenses. arrests to be delivered to the nearest army post. Article of War 106 authorizes action.
Almee Whittemore, skipper of the Van der Vil Gyime, won a tense Massachusetts Bay yacht race over the South Boston Yacht Club’s Derchen. Challenging swells and a southwesterly wind tested seamanship as Whittemore surged from behind to take the lead near Sculpin Ledge, under the supervision of the Massachusetts Yacht Racing Union.
The Winthrop Highlands Association held its eighth annual meeting at the Winthrop Arms Monday evening with the largest attendance in the history of the organization. The surge in membership recently cited as a key factor behind the strong turnout.
