Winthrop Lodge of Elks plans a testimonial banquet for Tony Lazzeri star second baseman of the New York Yankees. The event will be held next Saturday evening at 7 o clock in the Elks Club auditorium Winthrop Beach. The dinner honors Lazzeri upon his announced retirement from professional baseball effective at season end.
Representative Daniel J Honan and Chairman Roy W Pigeon protested at a public hearing before the Insurance Commissioner against the proposed 1938 rate increase for compulsory liability insurance on Winthrop cars. They criticized the high overhead allowance and pledged to seek a legislative recess commission to investigate insurer receipts and expenditures.
The Winthrop Yacht Club hosts its annual Cup Night at the Clubhouse this Saturday evening September 25. Commodores from Massachusetts Bay clubs and local officials Honan and Mayor Bergin will attend. Prizes include Hustler class awards and trophies named for club leaders. a banquet at 7 p.m. and dancing 9 to midnight.
Cheerleaders for the 1937 38 football season will be chosen this week at a competition in the Winthrop High School assembly hall. A committee of teachers will select three girls and three boys.
A special town meeting appropriated 29250 for WPA projects Public Welfare Old Age Assistance and Soldiers Benefits to be borrowed and repaid over five years. It also authorized 13000 to buy land for cemetery purposes funded from the Cemetery Lots Fund. A motion to form a three member committee to study establishing a commissary for Public Welfare was approved unanimously to report at the next annual meeting.
Lt. Col. J. J. McDonough announces WPA employees must take suitable outside jobs or risk dismissal. The rule requires accepting employment offered by the U S Employment Service, state services, or private business if work matches training, offers reasonable conditions, and pays comparable wages. The Young Woman's Club marked its fifteenth anniversary with a Sept. 16 celebration in Social Hall. Dorothy R. Sullivan welcomed guests as president, founder Weymouth’s Eveline Causer, past presidents, and absent members were acknowledged. Maude Wallace Schrader spoke on film production, noting potential color cinema in ten years.
The Legislative Commission appointed to study the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad toured ferries and lines last Wednesday. Attending were Representatives Welch Crosby Honan and Riley and railroad officials President Simmons General Manager Powell and Superintendent Sullivan.
The Baptist and Methodist of Winthrop announce a Sunday night Union Service at 7 30 at the Methodist Church. Rev Dr Herbert Johnson a prominent Baptist minister will preach. Also participating are Rev A Ray Meserve and Rev Harry Belmont Hill in the service.
