Defense Day Observed at Fort Banks in Winthrop Parade
Defense Day on September 12 saw both Army and civilians in Winthrop participate with a registration stand on the railroad circuit and many enrolled. A military inspection tested officer and troop readiness as 438 registered, 245 with service. The Fort Banks garrison joined the patriotic parade route ending at Thornton Park before retreat as Boston troops reported for another demonstration.

An operation was performed with hope of saving the leg, though amputation was feared. Whittemore fought the procedure and is now recovering.
