Fifth Annual Flower Show of Garden Club’s Event

The fifth annual Flower Show of the Garden Club of the Winthrop Woman's Club ran September 11 and 12 at Ellis' Hall under Mrs. Melvin Colson and Mrs. Frank Ward. A terraced garden stage featured a lighted fountain, gamely colored displays, and special awards to the Girl Scouts for a woodland scene. Judges awarded ribbons across classes. standout entries included a cotton plant in bloom by Mrs. William H. Greenlaw and Gladioli by Eva Blanchard. Ralph Woollett won the National Garden Bureau Bronze Medal for vegetables.

Winthrop High Football Season Tickets Offer

Winthrop High School offers an adult season ticket for 1.85 covering four games at Miller Field starting September 25. Individual game prices are Brookline 35 cents and 50 cents for the other three games, saving 85 cents versus single admissions. Tickets available at the High School Office, local stores, or Miller Field box office opening Sept. 25. Coach Bob Perry leads a promising Huskies squad.

Haigis Club Plans Voter Contact Drive in Winthrop

The Haigis-for-Governor Club of Winthrop met in the Town Hall hearing room Wednesday evening with President Kensington presiding. Plans to contact local voters in the coming weeks were discussed. The group invites all interested citizens to attend the next meeting on Wednesday evening September 23 in the Town Hall. Officers include Charles A. Rockwood, secretary, and Howard Bissell, treasurer.

Winthrop parents are invited to apply to the Board of Health over the next two weeks to obtain free toxoid or toxin-antitoxin immunization for diphtheria. Three injections are typically given one to three weeks apart with minor side effects such as a red spot, mild fever, or headache.

Couple Honored On 25th Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd A. Lowe of Sea View Avenue were celebrated at a supper party hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Wallace Haley at 210 Pauline Street. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Webster Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Percy Sterling, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Cain, and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Fielding. The Haley home featured silver decorations and large silver bells with rose petals as guests passed beneath them. The Lowes received silver gifts as the party ended after games and singing.

Thomas Wins Republican Nomination in Three-Cornered Race

Edward R. Thomas wins the Republican nomination for Representative in a three candidate contest with 1,192 votes 43 percent. Edward H. Homer secures the State Senate nod in the district with 1,996 votes led by Winthrop and Saugus results.
