The Flower Show held at the Deane Winthrop Barn on Shirley Street Monday afternoon under the Winthrop Garden Club drew broad approval for its marvelous and gorgeous displays.
A light voter turnout is anticipated next Tuesday amid four Republican candidates for the House seat while the Democratic candidate runs unopposed. As of now, voter interest appears minimal despite campaign efforts by the candidates. Leonard C. Atkinson and Daniel T. Cal are noted in the report.
The Winthrop Interclub Bowling League will hold its annual meeting at the Winthrop Yacht Club on Monday evening September 19 for officer elections and season arrangements. Secretary Charles W. Dorr urges full representation of members.
The Community Hospital carnival at Ingleside Park faced steep losses due to bitter cold on Thursday and Friday, but profits will still support the treasury. Miss Amelia Stentein of 49 Lewis Avenue won a Chevrolet, while six major prizes went to W D Jones, Max Wolk, Buddy Guarine, Mrs. Nathan Goldberg, and D A Ramsey.
Members of the Luncheon Club of Boston formed in 1904 hosted their annual golf outing at Winthrop Golf Club with an afternoon tournament and an evening clambake and lobster dinner. About 1000 members guests and friends attended while 55 golfers entered the afternoon matches.
A public hearing was held before the Planning Board on Monday evening in the Town Hall Hearing Room regarding the application of the trustees of Winthrop Community Hospital. The matter concerns a change in town zoning to include the land and building on Winthrop Street.
Twenty five World War veterans from this town were presented with the Purple Heart at Ingleside Park last Saturday afternoon. Adj-Gen John H Agnew of the Massachusetts National Guard made the presentation, assisted by Lieut Colonel Paul Bunker of the regular army, with the band playing martial tunes.
Invited guests will participate in the dedication with plans nearly complete. Congressman Chas. L. Underhill and local officials from Chelsea Revere and Boston are among expected attendees. A 2:30 parade forms on Hermon Street, routing through Winthrop Pleasant Bartlett Woodside Pauline and Main Streets ending at Metcalf Square with a reviewing stand at Pauline and Hermon.
The Republican League of Winthrop endorses G Wallace Tibbetts for nomination as Republican Representative to the General Court. The league notes Tibbetts has accomplished much in town affairs and warrants support as a candidate.
Republican candidate D. T. Callahan expresses strong confidence voters will back him in the forthcoming election. He notes a shifting voter focus and believes his national and state experience position him to win with a four-way race shaping the final tally.
